I am still going to enjoy his potrayal of the Joker. No matter the reality, I am going to pretend he is still with us all. Man I hate this kind of tragedy.
He is a great artist of his trade.

Wow, this one really caught me off guard. I think I'll watch Brokeback Mountain when I get home.

To all those worried about The Dark Knight, I think it's safe to say it'll still come out on time. He was already in the middle of filming his next movie, Terry Gilliam's The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus (side note: Gilliam is quite possibly the most cursed of all filmmakers).

What an awful, sad waste of an immensely talented artist. He was one of those people who could elevate even occasional dreck (Knight's Tale? Cassanova? anyone?) to interesting places.

I am still excited to see him in Dark Knight, I think it will be a landmark performance, but it will also sadly punctuate the loss of a truly fine actor.

I think he's been "dating" the Olson thing...which might explain what he was doing in her apartment...or maybe he was subletting.

really, really fucked up. he WAS a good actor.

and, discussions about the economy and discussions about politics AND discussions about dead artists can all occupy the same sphere of being...one doesn't preclude the other. And a dead actor DOES effect the economy. If he wasn't done with the Batman movie, that causes a financial impact to a multi million dollar project AND his death is very likely to add to the gross of a multi million dollar project...

everything IS money.

besides, I don't understand people who don't approve of certain threads, but then continue to lurk around and comment on them. If you don't like a thread, then don't read it.

Could he just be in a coma. With all those sleeping pills maybe he is appearing dead and unresponsive. I know it is far fetched and all, but there are cases of people who awake from these situations that are pronounced dead at the scene. Why does doctors always jump the gun and start autopsy cutting before ultimately, checking out the science behind unconciousness. It could be possible to revive someone like this. adrenalin shots something.
I am saddened and anxious by all this so I guess I am just hoping beyond hope for a miracle like the story of the guy who grabbed the nurse who was pronounced dead.

It's absolutely tasteless right now to speculate about what's happened here, but I have to say: I just don't buy suicide.

His career had never been better...He was 5 months away from the release of the biggest movie of his career, and was in the middle of filming with Gilliam, who he'd worked with before (Brothers Grimm) and thus presumably liked. He had a 2-year-old daughter and a seemingly grounded life in Manhattan, if such a thing is possible for a film star. He was about to get a massage, at a friend/girlfriend's house, and he chooses this exact moment to off himself?

Either it was accidental, or foul play was involved. Regardless, I loved his work and my heart goes out to his family and friends.

fuck you maxine. the fact is, the death of one celeb gets more fucking play than bernanke cutting rates, and thats sick. Ledger died because he had problems, but i don't pity a person who dies from killing themselves.

also, it shows what you define as class when you wish ill will upon me and my non existent condo. thats really classy, wishing financial and physical harm on someone because they don't feel any sympathy for a fucking actor that had no fucking relevance to ones daily life.

bell-ave @ 57 -- like shit-tons of others have said, many of us are able to pay attention to more than one thing at the same time. both ledger's death and the rate cuts are news, and both are paid attention to. ledger's death is of course sexier than a fed rate cut, but no less newsworthy. i know about ledger's death, but also think the .75 rate cut is economic suicide for this stupid country cuz it'll weaken the dollar, encourage more credit/spending and fuck us over in terms of inflation, oil-prices and everything shitty thing that comes with them. oh yeah -- and ledger's dead. that sucks. get off your high horse and be nice.

strangeways, its a fucking blog so i feel compelled to point out what a bunch of idiots you all are for feeling bad about this.

maxine, was heath ledger your dad? was he the dad of your friend? See maxine, the problem with your argument is that I should feel just as bad as his family does, despite not knowing his family nor being part of it. the whole strawman of me explaining to his daughter the fact he was a pill popping actor is stupid. i'm sorry you never matured past the point of J-14 and BOP and idolize people who don't even give two fucks who you are and wouldn't mourn your death.

If this was a personal death to me I would feel sad about it like when my friend's dad died at 57 despite appearing reasonably healthy. but then again you wouldn't feel sad about that because he wasnt a celeb, he wasnt attractive, and you wouldnt recognize him. but he was the head pharmacist of S.F. General and he saved more fucking lives than Heath Ledger. thousands of meaningful people die every day, they just don't happen to be meaningful in the most vapid and removed way possible; celebrity status.

Life goes on, whether or not an interest rate has changed or an actor dies. The interest rate is going to go up and down a thousand times before you die, and a thousand famous people are going to die. It's all just words on a computer monitor.

Posted by michael strangeways | January 22, 2008 4:23 PM

What has more impact on your life strangeways? heath ledgers death or interest rates?

i think people are dumb for a. putting out seemingly heartfelt emotions for someone that they don't really know, and only because he is famous. b. for getting on my ass for pointing our how shallow that expression is. its a shallow, hollow gesture to mourn for a celebrity. if you don't do it you're an asshole, but if you do it only to not seem like an asshole then you're making hollow gestures. even if the gesture is genuine it is shallow because you didn't really know who he was and you don't make similar gestures to other people who die around you all the time.

Bellevue Ave - Did a celebrity run over your foot or kill your puppy? What is wrong about feeling bad that someone who was a well-known actor who was in films that many of us here enjoyed died at such a young age? Mourning is taking it a bit too far, I agree, but feeling genuine sympathy for his friends and family and also feeling a sense of loss that we won't get to see him really become the talent that I believe he was. Like River Phoenix, or Brad Renfro, or Kurt Cobain. It is called being a human being. It is sad when someone who has reached a certain level of success dies too young or by their own hand because it makes our toil in the muck that much more sad. How many of you have thought that if you were a rich and famous movie or rock star that your life would be perfect. Apparently, it isn't.

I think mourning loss of potential makes me deep, not shallow. I think you are overlooking the bigger picture.

Now shut up.

Bellevue Ave obviously doesn't understand the concept of compartmentalization. Personally, I can care about, oh i dunno, 20 different things a day, giving each thing the degree of attention or concern its worth to me. My list of things to give a shit about can range from #1 the economy to #8 Heath Ledger dying.

Call it personalismo, but it's perfectly normal for people to relate to or sympathize with celebrities they happen to like. If Pacino or Daniel Day-Lewis died, a lot of people who claim to not give a shit about Ledger or celebrities in general, would be crying crocodile tears. And yes, people can even empathize with second rate actors.

Oh fuggit, now I've caught the disease.

Very shocked about Heath Ledger though; this stuff usually doesn't happen to people at the peak of their career. Or in his case, he had years to go before he peaked. I was looking forward to seeing the kind of guy he'd be in his 40s. Damn, he had all the makings...

Heath Ledger was someone we could relate to bellevue ave, even if he was a movie star. see he did something he loved to do and got to where he was. That why some of us like those success stories. They actors are sometimes innovating. And art is just as important in our lives as the economy. Sorry about that if that frightens you.
The man was someone who is in our lives, and yes that could seem like family. He on peoples walls as posters, on our dvds, actor and film schools talk about guys like him, and there rolls have some impact on life as well.
what is with you Bellevue ave and lake and your superioity complex.
You feel as if in our mourning or being upset about death outside of our family as something Hollow? WTF?
Relax. Let people feel something deep about somebody, even if he was no mother teresa. I cannot stand it when folks get all pissy and mean when others mourn an artists death, especially actors. You act as if Politics and economy and are some god given choice for us and we have to brush aside our 'false idol' for your sanctimoniuos bullshit about the economy.
And another thing is, yes Heath Ledger was a great interesting human being of camera and on. I could argue on those points and get philisophical and all about we may not have really known him personally, but we do not know you either. O.K. I will. Heath put in hard work to entertain us and make stories into life believable. He had a name as well, just like us. He had a life. and we got to sort of share that experience.
You on the other hand will always just be Bellevue ave. Or Lake. Who the hell are you. Do you really care about the economy? Is this what you were born in life for, to attack us and help us from mourning a rockstar or actor hero. The economy going crqazy. the skys falling. so what. Half the people in Africa are dying to and that is getting no front page to your economic woes.

RIP Heath ,oh and to make Bellevue and Lake feel better RIP American Dollar.

I totally care more about Heath Ledger than the interest rate. This would be true even if he were not dead. The importance of the interest rate is ambiguous at best; no one knows if we're going into a recession, and even if we are, it's just a normal part of the business cycle. It's like getting excited and surprised the sun is coming up again. Yeah, it really sucks for some people who need to be cashing out as the market crashes. But why should I care more about them than a celebrity death?

I enjoy watching people who are good at their craft. Heath Ledger was excellent at his craft, and watching him gave me great enjoyment. And I value enjoyment in my life.

That is why Heath Ledger is more important than the interest rate cut.
