Heard in the Future

posted by on January 4 at 13:55 PM

I can hear someone in the future saying something like this: “You know how bad Bush was? He was so bad, so hopeless, so ignorant, he made white folks vote for a black president. You can’t get no worse than that. No siree!”

That's a great photo of him and his wife.

Charles, I think the person listening to someone say that would reply "shut up and smell the coffee you racist idiot. This isn't the 1960s." Of course, the same fool would say the same if a woman was president too.

Heh. Already posted by Jack Turner at jackandjillpolitics blogspot: "I would like to take this opportunity to thank George W. Bush, for if he hadn't of been such an utter failure on so many levels, then the country wouldn't remotely be open to the 'possibility' of a Black man as President."

Wow, Michelle Obama is HOT in this picture. Too bad the campaign probably forces her to drab it up to look more conservative. As to the point of this post, I hope you're wrong. After all, there are plenty of honkies running for people to choose from if it was about all that.

here's the quote:

2) Of the four reasons that white Americans like Obama, one of the biggest is this: he is not a black American in the historical sense. His pronounced African side (it’s something his publicity team promotes with no hesitance) removes a historic sting that, say, a white African (or European) would instantly feel if Obama was in power in Africa.

I wonder if Obama wins will our country please focus on other issues besides him enjoying his ride as the first Black President. This actually should not even be an issue if equal treatment was involved. Also, what experience is this clown going to bring to DC. With whom is this inexperienced pretender going to fill his cabinet with? If he is anything like Marion Barry of DC or the idiot Nagin down in New Orleans, our country is cooked. Those were prime examples on just bringing in your friends without any experience and driving the whole city into the toilet. Except this time it will be the country. This guy is just a smooth talker and nothing more. No experience and nothing to bring to the table. Shows how smart our voters are in this country.

and my response:

Posted by wisepunk at 1/4/08 12:04 a.m.

wow. Burton. Exactly how much xenophobic racism can you spew in a single paragraph? I really am thankful for idiots like you. I'm not a hillary fan and if she was to be the dem nom I'm sure that you and your "equals" would yell and scream enough to sway just enough of the public to ensure another "2000" style election. You don't get to do that with Obama.

You seriously want to invoke a "my race is better than your race" argument as to why we shouldn't vote for him. Are you friggin serious? This guy graduated Magna Cum Laud from harvard law, and you invoke Nagin.

You know what? I'm glad you laid out your ideas now. It will be like watching the extiction of a useless species, evoloution at its most creul. The death of the mindset like yours will be the greatest achievement of the American society. Years from now I want to be able to ask you, "do you realize now that we were right?"

You ask for experience. Was that your reason for the bush vote in 2004? The rich kid who ran every business he was ever handed into the ground was "experienced". It is time for a change, and I will take the choices of Barack Obama.

You can call me an elitist kike who is out to get you. And you would be right. I don't claim to be perfect, but I did SERVE my country(3/77 armor kuwait 91). I put myself through college (go cougs). Hell, I was even in Mensa for a year (there were people speaking kligon at the first meeting, I had to quit). I was correct in every prediction that I made about GWB prior to the 2000 election, even about the invasion of Iraq before the 2000 election! I KNOW in my heart that I am on the winning team. I know that you and your simple, silly ideas are on the way out, and if we can't change your mind, then your children will wonder when they are adults how you could have been so wrong.

It's coming. The perfect storm. All the evil lies that you have been told, and have probaly repeated, will be shown to be false. This country will be stronger, and the stupidity of your ideas will be mocked for generations to come. Your sky is falling, and the sun is rising on ours.

@39 - ok ... well, again, I don't get it. Is the point supposed to be that Charles is a racist for believing that a lot of white Americans find it hard to vote for a black guy? Because honestly, if you think that's not true, and that pointing it out is "racist", you're pretty deluded.

@36: Bravo, wisepunk. See you at Moe on Thursday--I'll buy you a $2 beer.

I wonder what those who think Obama will appoint inexperienced friends to his administration think of the incompetent dolts we have been stuck with for the past 7+ years. The botched response to Katrina? Waterboarding? Warrantless wiretapping? Underequipped soldiers in Iraq? The war in Iraq, period? I can't wait until this nightmare is over.

Forgive my ignorance, but can someone kindly explain to me how Barack counts as Black? Seems to be at least 50% White to me, so why apply the incorrect label? As he fulfills the constitutional requirement for the office (which I assume he does, unlike say, Arnold the Governator) he is sufficient for the post of president of the U.S.A.

It always strikes me as odd how a half black (sorry, can't recall his father's origins) man is "Black" and not the other half. WTF is that?

What a backwards world you folks live in. In the words of my father (about as un-PC an individual as you can get), Barrack's a zebra. About 50% black and 50% white.

Ah, fuck this post, it sounds completely assinine even to me.

Anyways, it still is odd that Barrack's spoken of as a "Black" man rather than a "White" man as by whatever logic results in him being categorized as "Black", he's just as "White". Unless of course you are some kind of poor thinker, in which case whatever fucked up label you can come up with to keep someone down works.

In short, it's not clear that the U.S. will in fact, properly understood, have its first Black president should Barrack be elected. If bloodlines are what determines "Black" or blackness, pick a pureblood (ie. no white ancestors) descendent of the Shona, Tutsi, Hutu, or Zulu or other African ethnic group (there are a hundred or so Bantu descended ethnic groups that work), who's parents immigrated to the U.S. and who was born in the U.S. Then, from the twisted logic that seems to be at work here, the U.S. will have elected a "Black" president properly understood. For Barrack, I think that it could correctly be said that the U.S. elected the best man for the job, a good man (or at least decenet enough to pass muster), but not an unqualified "Black" man. That would be something of a lie.

Enough of my blather for one day.

Posted by wet_suit | January 5, 2008 1:58 PM

I digress again, I guess I haven't blathered enough just yet.

As a follow up to my somewhat (but not really) assinine post above, there is no question that Hillary is a woman. There is no falseness in saying that she would be the first woman elected as president of the U.S.A. However, in my view, no such simple statement could be made of Mr. Obama (see my argument above on this point).

If anyone thinks this a stupid thing to say, consider what would happen if, say, Jamie Lee Curtis was elected as President. You'd have a human being that looked like a woman (and quite an attractive one at that) as president, but she would in fact be a male (genetically speaking anyways). She'd be the best damn looking president the United States ever had, but IMHO properly understood, she could not properly be considered a woman president. This is no slight to Jamie Lee, or to women, but the complexities of the real world do not fit into some easily categorized box as people seem to like to think (a la Tiger Woods, another one who is not, strictly speaking, "Black").

Good thing for Hillary she doesn't have that problem. Could you imagine the ruckus that would cause?

With luck, one day it will be sufficient that whoever it is that is in issue is A. human, B. competent, C. on our side (whatever that means in the context) and nothing else will matter too much. That day is far, far off, but one day, with luck, we'll see it.

Wet_Suit, with a quick trip to Wikipedia you could have found out that Barack (one R) Obama was born in Honolulu, Hawaii in 1961. As a native born American over the age of 35 he therefore satisfies the constitutional requirements to hold the office of president. He is also, as you point out, of racially mixed ancestry. His father was Kenyan, his mother Caucasian (sorry, I don't know which specific European country her ancestors came from).

It is a uniquely American phenomenon that if anyone has any known African ancestry they are considered black. Once upon a time there were several categories for people of mixed race: mulatto, quadroon, octoroon, etc. These terms are obviously considered offensive today; only mulatto appears in my American Heritage dictionary. But prior to the Civil War persons classified as such had different rights and privileges denied to those of pure African ancestry. Things changed in the post-Civil War South when whites decided that anyone with any African ancestry (the term was "one drop" of African blood) was considered black. This situation was satirized in Mark Twain's novel Pudd'nhead Wilson and the 1920's musical Show Boat. And, as I mentioned, it is uniquely American. Even South Africa under apartheid had a separate legal category ("coloured") for people of mixed race.

I don't know if this answers your question of why Obama is considered black even though one of his parents is white, but obviously the one drop theory still goes for more than a few Americans. As for whether Obama's race will hurt him in the election, I doubt if the trailer trash bigots who won't vote for a black man would be voting for a Democrat anyway. For myself, I would be jumping for joy if we had someone in the White House, regardless of race or gender, who can start to undo the damage of this present administration. Quite a challenge for whoever that person is.

Also, regarding the alleged hermaphroditism of Jamie Lee Curtis--totally bogus urban legend. The one about the poodle in the microwave is more believable.

And finally, @17 regarding Mrs Obama's KMart dress, take it from RainMan: KMart sucks.
