Welcome news, Dan, but why, oh why do you still choose to give Drudge revenue by clicking on his awful site?

Hope springs eternal,

but if anyone can screw up a sure thing, it's the Democrats. And I are one.

Hmm. Let' see....

Months to go....Democrats in the lead.....

Yeah. They'll blow it.

Where the fuck have you been? This has been up on Drudge for like 6 hours already. OK, so I'm probably better off not knowing where you've been....

Uh... squeezing a little life in between the Slog posts, Fifty. Hope you don't mind.

Riddle me this:

If Hillary really was co-president with Bill, then we've practially already had a female president. It's a small step from co-president to president, so why get all misty eyed over it?

But have we ever had a black co-president? What's the highest an african american has risen? An actual black president would be huge.

On the other hand, if Hillary wasn't really co-president, then she's too inexperienced.

Naw, Danny, I actually envy you for having some time on your own. Thought that was implicit in the second sentence of my post.

@7

Well, Clinton was thought of as the "first black president," so I guess the Clinton marriage could be thought of as the first interracial First Couple.

Uh, make that the THIRD sentence, Dan; doing this on a BlackBerry has its disadvantages.
And OK, Elenchos, there's never been a black "co-President." Plenty of black mayors, though. And they have such a stellar track record....

Posted by Fifty-Two-Eighty | January 12, 2008 8:03 PM

So you're saying that in order for a black man to become president, he needs to run on the record of all members of his race who have held executive office? And you feel that, as a race, blacks make poor mayors?

I take it the Hillary camp has found themselves a new meme to spread.

Big fucking deal. Pres of USA is basically a crappy civil serivce gig, and who is left to do what will be a huge clean up job after W et al are gone? Blacks and women.

@ 10 & 11

Well, this got ugly quick, but it does point out why a poll saying Obama would beat McCaine by one point (with +-3.5 point error) is less than meaningless, when you call someone on the phone, they know you pretty much know who they are (you at least know their number) so they are unlikely to admit being racist, but a secret ballot is something else.

If you want Obama for president, you should pray for Huckabee

Elenchos, yes to your first statement; as to black mayors, the record speaks for itself. And I certainly can't speak for Hillary or her "meme." You'd have to ask her about that...and trust me, the odds of you getting a straight answer from her to that question are about the same as getting a straight answer out of Obummer.

I find the idea of the Democrats losing their lead somewhat unnerving. I mean, they should have had the 2000 election in the bag, but we got stuck with Dumbya. My only consolation is the belief that he's made the Republican party so unpopular that any one could run as a Democrat.

And on another (off topic) note...

...just in case anyone is in the mood for another "Every Child Deserves A Mother And Father Story".

Y.F., more like "every child deserves a mother, a father, AND a competent social worker," but yeah, you're right - no shortage of dumbasses out there.

Read the report, they were both statistically tied with McCain.

And remember, a statistical tie means that the methods used CANNOT determine who would actually have more votes. In 1000 person polls, this means a win of 20-40 votes. if the polls were binding, there would be recounts and the supreme court would decide the winner, which at this point would definitely be the republican.

I'm at a friend's house with some other people I find rather annoying. I excused myself to the one room where I can get away for a little privacy for a few minutes and decided to see what's new on the Slog. I saw the headline and yelled YAHOO! at the top of my lungs. Considering where I am and what I am sitting on, my friend is probably wondering what exactly I'm doing in here. I fear she may cut off my alcohol supply.

Then I read these posts. What a downer! Yes, I know the lead isn't that great over McCain. And yes, I know the Dems track record on blowing elections. But can't we just enjoy the moment for now?

The real question to all this change is when we are really going to back up our chosen leaders when they face the man.
When are we going to challenge the retoric back to the republicans when they come out with their bullshit toward our democrats? when are we going to stop mouthing of in slogs and blogs and are really going to make our opinions loud to the public on T.V. and the media?
The real question is when is we, and the stranger or any outlet toward the liberal side going to go to make our selves a voice in public domain, louder than the freaking swift boat that took out Kerry?
Oh we were pissed off , but did we do anything about it?
No
All we did was bitch about Nader and other blah blah......But really did nothing execpt vote and leave our chosen one to the pack of dogs.......
that chewed him up.

If your going to vote vote.
But do more this time....Back them up with the power of your voice.
If they call your leader a bitch. Then step up and call them one better. and not on slog. but t.v.
Dan people I'm sayin go to something other than the Dail;y show....
Comedy isn't going to win this freaking election.
Our dem leaders are their on a big pedestal and we need to help them land on the X.
So stop sitting back and wishing for the perfect landing. Help them. Computer wise, blog wise, whatever it takes.
srry buzzed, and haveing a good time even though the hawks lost. but this time get oof our ass and do something for our leaders instead of them asking us to do soething all the freaking time?
Go kerny... next year maaaaaan.

So anyways the point is people, support your leaders with more than retoric.
If swift boat could take out Kerry. What the hell can you do?
Obama, Clinton, edwards, need more than just voters, they need you. so voice up, Blog up and power up. or STFU.
Go network your chosen leader instead of blog your leader.
Are you going to let the repugs own the net in the next year? Please dont for the sake of all thats left of humanity.
but with the title and sounds of this blog......
YOU ALL HAVE ALREADY GIVEN UP.

Thats the problem

Polls are weird. I will freely admit that as a messianic Clinton supporter, it always gave me pause that Obama polled better against Republicans than my favored candidate. Nobody wants to throw the election to the Republicants. It seemed indicative of this thing that everybody talks about but that I don't feel- about how Clinton is supposedly reflexively unlikable. (Which to me is like the urge to go to church- I understand that it exists as a human force, I just don't feel it. At all.)

But whatever, it was a real polling phenomenon. And now, if this one CNN poll is to be believed, that "likability gap" has gone away. I realize all the Obamatrons out there will just discount this poll, but take it at face value for a second- what could have changed the likability of the two candidates?

I don't think Obama's done anything in the last several weeks to make himself less likable (the Jesse Jackson Jr thing, like the Cuomo thing, seems limited to the blogosphere.) So if this change is real, it has to be because Clinton is seen as more likable.

The "emotional moment"? Being the Comeback Girl in NH? WJC's attack on Obama's record?

I realize that everyone is just going to go back to soundbites in about five seconds, but if anybody wants to actually respond rationally to this I would appreciate it. Thanks.

Here's how we can lose:

1. Get bent out of shape when O or C fight each other in the primary elections. Be shocked that one would dare to criticize the other.

Immediately cry foul if this attempt is made.

2. Creat the utmost in bad will betweeen the two sides. Alleging racism and sexism should be done as soon as possible.

3. Start arguing that the other one is really a closet republican and compromiser. Examples:
Clinton is the same as Bush! Bush-Clinton-Bush-Clinton is all one dynasty! Or try this: Obama's appealing to moderatesand even R's! He'll compromise on health care!

4. Get morose and instead of being happy that we seem to be on the verge of victory, get morose and reeat endlessly we are going to fuck it up like we always do.
5. Don't do a damn thing about actually writing a check, or volunteering to work in a state that matters like Missouri, Ohio or Florida, or talking to all your relatives there.
6. Make sure the O-C fight is so bitter neither one will pick the other for VP till hell frezzes over.
7. Blame every thing on "the politicians" and hold yourself above the process.
8. Never feel hopeful. Or inspiring.
Never say or feel that experience matters, too.
9. Never, ever say that both Obama and Clinton have huge strengths and positive factors; that both have more they share with the other than things on which they differ; or that both can win and are immeasurably better than any R.
10. Be cynical at root because that way you assure you don't get burned again. Reject the notion you are responsible for making change happen.

Election Fraud, there it is. Part of me enjoys the drama of the Obama, Clinton, Edwards, Paul debate, but I also know this is all bullshit. In the Kerry/Bush election, Kerry was ahead in the polls, and what do you know, Bush wins. In NH, Obama was ahead, and Clinton barely wins it. It is only rational to believe that the ones that control the Diebold voting machines are always going to fix it for the most conservative candidate. Why not?
As for the drama, I am skeptical about ALL the candidates, but I will never vote for Clinton. She voted for the war, and this alone excludes her from the White House. No matter what some mainstream media CNN poll states, most Americans are against the war, republican or democrat. Connect the dots tards.

I agree with @1.

That said, if everyone - and I do mean everyone - doesn't fight to get every single friend they know to vote in 2008, having a lead won't mean squat.

It's all about who actually VOTES.

Including the caucus on Feb. 9th.

P.S.: The Dems are the party of the Big Tent. Don't say bad things about the other candidates, it just helps the evil Big Bureaucracy Big Deficit Big Trade Deficit Red Bushies.
