Looks like Paul is playing the anti war drum. Romney and McCain have strong pro-war answers that will appeal to the conservatives.

I am surprised at how much they are sucking up to the fiscal conservatives.

I also know, after talking to a Republican friend, that most fiscal conservatives think McCain is more liberal than Hilary. Weird, I know.

They are also trying to be nice to eachother. All kiss kiss- hug hug and shit. Much like the Dem's in NH.

I agree with the analysis on MSNBC. Romney definitely won.

And that says a lot. I think the people who supported Thompson will support Romney.

And while McCain looks like the most likely nominee, it's very interesting to see how well Romney is doing against the others.

More liberal? Does that mean they think McCain is more likely to waste money? I'm not surprised by that. If they're associating Hil with her husband, it was on Bill's watch that we finally got the budget balanced.

Not to mention that McCain likes to complain about unnecessary federal spending, but always goes after the low-hanging fruit (supposedly frivolous scientific research) and never any real offenders (agricultural subsidies).

Yes they think he is more liberal than Hillary on MOST everything. And I know Hillary is a centrist, but her healthcare and other social spending is much greater than McCain.

That aside, most will refuse to vote for him. He is as polarizing as Hillary in his own party, and I dont think the mainstream media has covered it.

@10 - Fiscal conservatives are the Republican base. Bush convinced the religious right that they were the base, and boy are they pissed off now.

Most Republicans that I know are just pragmatic Libertarians. They couldn't give two shits about most social issues that the GOP takes under its wing (abortion, "sanctity of marriage", etc). All they care is about is taxes.

The social issues are solely for pandering to the religious right. The fiscal conservatives don't care as long as it helps them win elections. Most of the candidates don't really care either (Huckabee probably the sole exception).

It is for this reason that I think a Bloomberg candidacy helps the Democrats, regardless of who is nominated from either party. It's Ross Perot in 1992 all over again.

I don't know about that - Bloomberg's rabidly anti-gun. Scratch 4,000,000+ Republican votes on that issue alone.

McCain more liberal than Hillary???? The guy opposes Roe v. Wade, wants to keep us in Iraq for 100 years and is perfectly cool with bombing Iran. All that Maverick independent centrist hype is about McCain is pure BS. Outside of his support for immigration reform and campaign finance, he's just another war mongering right winger.

@19 He's also pretty big on the environment, supporting a cap-and-trade program.

@20 - I think we'll be seeing more of the right-wingers coming around on the environment. They finally realized that saying "global warming doesn't exist" is political suicide, especially when it's happening right before our eyes.

Romney said the Republican party was the party of 'change'.

Huckabee talked about the middle and lower classes, and for a few seconds, it almost seemed like I was listening to a man with some connection to the sane world and a grasp on facts. When a Endtimes Jesustard is the most appealing speaker, your party is in a world of trouble.

I'm not watching another one. No words of truth are ever spoken at these things.

When candidates were able to ask each other a question, I wanted Ron Paul to ask Giuliani, "So, Rudy. If MSNBC kicked Kucinich out of the debates because he is consistently at the bottom of the polls, why did they let you in? Even I poll higher than you."

But, you can't always get what you want!

I didn't watch this debate, and haven't seen any other Republican debates during this campaign. If I never hear a Republican justifying a poorly intentioned and ill considered opinion ever again, it will be too soon.

That being said, I just took a quick a tour through the conservative blogosphere, and it does my heart good to see how savagely the commentators have turned upon their own. None of the candidates are cruel enough for the likes of Limbaugh, Drudge, Michelle Malkin, Mark Levin, Rich Lowry, etc. They can't stomach a single one of their own candidates, and they are hacking them to pieces.

From the ever heartless Malkin: "Sanctuary Rudy’s slipping. Big Nanny Huck’s fading. McCain’s still channeling Geraldo. And Romney’s running Spanish language ads. And this is the Republican field."

I hope this keeps up. There won't be a single Republican voter come November.

I gotta say, I got a laugh out of huckabee. How do we rescue the economy (never mind the economy will heal itself before any of these people get elected)? Why add two lanes to some highway along the east coast! That is the answer--more build more roads!! He even said it would help fight global warming (after all, you'll be stuck in traffic less!). That was a good one.

I'll be frank with you. Giuliani was the only one that really got the globalization thing and was the only candidate with a real urban perspective. He was right--we need to think of china as a customer.

Good thing none of them said global warming didn't exist. Only Romney and Paul touched on social security. Face it, if you are under 40, what you are putting into it now isn't gonna come back... IMHO.

I only closely watched the first couple of debates, and decided early on that any of the Dems (with the possible exception of Gravel) was way better than any of the Republicans.

That said, my most primary concern at this moment in time is the earth and McCain is the only Republican who even gives a shit. Plus, if he is nominated, I feel pretty sure any Dem could tear him up on the war issue in the general election.

(And I hope I'm not fantasizing too much...)
