Slog - Comments on Golden Globes

The big winners at this year's non-event were Atonement for best drama and Sweeney Todd for best comedy or musical. Julian Schnabel for direction is a mild surprise, but the acting awards went to everyone you expected. Complete lineup here. The local angle: Eddie Vedder won for best original song--and somehow we managed to review the best motion picture made for television winner in the DVD column. Sean Nelson didn't like it. And the Jane Austen series on Masterpiece Theatre begins... now!...

Um ... you mean Sweeney Todd, right?

I must have missed the Sweeny Todd you reference in the SLOG story ... even the band was spelled Sweeney Todd ...

Persuasion was good, but I thought the BBC version was better.

@1-agreed. And I didnt know writers wrote the jokes for these awards until just now. The writing is never funny so i always thought the presenters wrote their parts. Plus, I hate modern musicals, so Johnny Depp and that Helena chick singing is just sinful in my book.

give us what we really want: a new "I,Claudius", or better yet, a new "Thorn Birds"...

The other version of Persuasion with Ciarin Hinds was so much better. Many things went unspoken, compared to this most recent version which has to explain absolutely everything through irritating and superfluous narration of Anne's innermost thoughts.

They also completely botched my favorite scene, when Wentworth arranged a ride for the overfatigued Anne. You would have to have read the book to understand what was going on.

Ich nicht sprechen den Schabelen, annie.

We were talking about your film reviews on Sunday, annie. We like how you tell us enough for us to ignore your up/down vote but let us decide if we want to see it on its own merits. The mark of a good critic - even when you disagree with her/his choices for movies, you can find what you need in the review to figure out if it's worth seeing.
