Now you're just being ridiculous. How about we get results from a state with more than a million people first?

Edwards isn't going anywhere before Super Tuesday.

I completely disagree. Edwards is not going to do well, but he makes Clinton and Obama better candidates. Go back and listen to Obama's and Clinton's speeches from tonight. They are beginning to incorporate some of his platform and that is a very good thing.

Leave 'im in. He sucks votes from Obama, helping my candidate, Hillary Clinton. When my mom, a heretofore Edwards supporter, heard what he said yesterday about Clinton's emotional moment, she *instantly* switched to Clinton. I'm convinced his aggressive, antagonistic attitude towards Clinton in the last five days cost Obama NH.

So by all means, let him stay in until the convention.

He can't win. He won't win. Ya, we get it. He wants to be Mr. President. But he also doesn't want. He KNOWS she'd be bad for the country.

At least 10 of his 16 something points tonight, had he not been in the race, would have gone to Obama. He's stealing votes from Obama. Just like the Nader people fucked us over in past elections.

If Edwards had a brain, or actually believed in what he claims to believe (CHANGE), he'd step back, back Obama, and hope for a chance at VP.

7

Let's not kick Edwards out yet--he brings something to the table. But dude needs some new stories to tell. He reminds me of my dad.

Edwards has set the tone of the Democratic primary, forcing Clinton and Obama to steal his populist rhetoric in order to win votes in these contests. He should stay in the race so that they continue to fight for the Edwards voters. If either of them adopt his language in the general election they will soundly beat the Republicans, who have no persuasive answer to his arguments on economic issues.

Fuck!

*But he also doesn't want HILARY TO WIN. He KNOWS she'd be bad for the country.

That's what I get for typing while high.

Fnarf, is your shift key broken or are you an imposter?

My enthusiasm wanes. Fed up with this bullshit tempest in a teacup (it's only the second state to vote) I turned to "The Cashmere Mafia".. and now I want to slit my wrists..... Can ANY candidate change the shit that is on TV??? I know... only I can change what's on my tv......

yeah, he definitely cost obama NH with his bone-headed response to hillary's "breakdown." it's just going to get worse for him from here on out. he's done.

What the hell are you talking about? Shift key?

Seriously, are you on drugs, Dan? With two strong candidates, Edwards can be perfectly positioned to be a kingmaker, even with meager support. Given that Obama and Clinton are probably going to be evenly matched in the next few races, any delegates that he swing one way or the other might just make the difference.

Now that's a man with poor political instincts. Maybe he's holding out for South Carolina, but if he can't pull a huge victory out of his ass there, I have no idea what he has left to hope for.

@15 You've got the right idea. He'll wait til after February 5th and both Hillary and Obama are sitting around with roughly 800 delegates. Then he'll open up the bidding for his couple hundred delegates and endorsement, which will decide the race.

Dammit, don't write off Edwards yet. And that's not to say he will miraculously win the nomination or something, but the man still has something left here. Just wish he wouldn't turn on Hilary so quickly. He's done it before. Very irritating.

Dan,
Did you smoke too much tonight? No way in hell Edwards should step out now. For one, he's the most honest candidate even if he doesn't present well. For two, we need him as Obama's VP because otherwise, Obama is going to have to figure out a whole lot of shit with no experience. We NEED Edwards.

Posted by call me a snot | January 8, 2008 11:37 PM

Bellevue Ave, Obama actually won MORE delegates from New Hampshire.

Posted by fnarf | January 8, 2008 11:40 PM

Edwards had made the race interesting. Staying in he keeps it so.
There is also the issue of delegates. It the current trend continues the nominee will be chosen at the Convention. Also good drama that draws voters to the Democrats.

Ummm Dan.

Did you say the same thing when Billary took 3rd place in Iowa?

Difference?

Ohh yeah.. I forgot. You are not objective in your analysis.

My bad.

I love all these "well candidate x will go to the convention with N delegates, and then candidate y will..."

There's no *fucking* way this thing will still be in play by the convention. The last time the top of the ticket was still in question going into the convention was 1960!

Either Clinton or Obama will come out of Super Tuesday with a preponderance of delegates, and a lock on the nomination. Period.

unlike evryone else here in seattle I dont vote democratic out of reflix i vote for people that reflict my issues or values...edwards is putting those values on the table....getting people to talk about economic populisem...I think obama might be inclined...but the clintons ruined this countrys economy

in a race against obama and any rebuplican I'll go obama
clinton against huckabee or mccain....I'll go republican...clinton against anyone else...I'll set home and try to drink and drug myself to death

fair enough #31
and if we dont like the canadites we have the right not to vote at all...personaly I find noneparticipation due to disgust under rated
I like the model that some countrys follow
if less then 50% of voteing public turn out it's not considerd an election and the race has to start all over again with new canadites and an interm non-partison (well in theory) presidenr.

It doesn't matter if he drops out or doesn't drop out. Dean stayed in through Wisconsin and just did not get votes. Edwards' people will abandon him for Obama, because they don't want Hillary. Unless E wins SC, which would be freakish, according to all polls. But who knows, between now and then, Elizabeth might cry.

Posted by Phoebe | January 9, 2008 1:42 AM

Freakish? Edwards won SC in 2004. Keep in mind the polls predicted Obama with a strong lead in NH today. Polls trolls.

I like Edwards. He makes the term "class warfare" acceptable to use. This scares the GOP far more than Clinton, who gets Krauthammer's endorsement.

i'm an edwards person and i'm going hillary if he's not viable (and im in a super tuesday state) and so are about 10 other friends and family that i know of.

so don't just assume all of his votes are going to obama. we need a president who knows how to work it out to get us out of this mess we are in. someone with experience. yes, obama is a wonderful orator. love him. he's great. he'll get my vote in 8 years. but for now i'm voting for someone who is badass enough to fight. not someone who is full of compromise and will get bulldozed over.

While I'm an Obamaton, I like having Edwards in the race to keep pulling everyone leftward and giving voice to the anti-corporate, progressive ideas that made the Dems a great party back before Bill and Hill dragged it into the DOMA/Dont Ask Dont Tell/WTO/NAFTA center.

Can we at least wait until Super Tuesday, after a significant number of states have spoken, before we start telling any of the Democratic voices to shut the fuck up? Anxious as we are to get Shrub out of the White House, this is a primary, and we need the process to test out who really has the skills and abilities to rescue the United States from disaster. God forbid we end up with another crappy campaigner like Dukakis or Kerry...

@42 after reading these comments it does not matter if Dan still agrees fully with his post or not. There is a lot of disagreement out there and it is good to read the various views. I have a frieNd who says Edwards is the new Nader. I totally disagree, but it is interesting to think about where he is coming from.

the nader comparison is ridiculous. nader ran in the gen election, y'know, the final countdown, where pulling votes from gore meant bush won! this is a nomination process. nothing is lost by having him in the dem nomination process. jesus, that just seems so obvious to me.

@8 you crack me up. "If either of [Obama or Clinton] adopt [Edwards's] language in the general election they will soundly beat the Republicans, who have no persuasive answer to his arguments on economic issues." Is that based on the fantastic reception primary voters have given Edwards's language so far? His negative and phony class warfare rhetoric (which obscure his admirable underlying policies) has earned him a solid third place among Democrats, and you think if Clinton or Obama adopt this rhetoric they will succeed with Republicans and Independents in the fall? Wow. Pass the crack, please.

PS - I'll take an in-your-face class warrior over a mealy-mouthed triangulator any day of the week, particularly as a VP candidate.

As a man who's either tied for third or come in third in the two major contests thus far, and who's attempt to arcweld himself to the Obama Change boat has utterly failed, I know it's hard for Edwards to get out of the house and to get ready, and my question is very personal: How does he do it?

Posted by Big Sven | January 9, 2008 10:20 AM

This is totally ridiculous.

Sen Edwards is a fine candidate, just like Sen Obama and Sen Clinton - and many more.

He should stay in the race, if only to force the MSM - and the Stranger is part of this sadly - to talk about the POLICY differences and stances of the Dem and GOP candidates.

Stop whining.
