Down to the Wire

posted by on January 15 at 15:49 PM

NBC’s fight to keep Dennis Kucinich out of tonight’s Democratic debate went all the way to the Nevada Supreme Court today. Still no decision. Tune in to my debate liveblog, which begins at 6 p.m. PST, to find out who’s on the stage.

Any phone number you have that I can call to voice my disappointment with NBC?

Sargon, there are all kinds of phone numbers out there for NBC News (in NYC) or NBC Universal (in Culver City, CA). Unfortunately, the old adage "never talk to the person who answers the phone" exists for a reason, and it's highly unlikely that you would ever get past the person who answers the phone on this issue.

Because this debate could be the moment that Kucinich's campaign turns around and gains the momentum necessary to carry the nomination?

@5: Kucinich can't win and Kucinich won't win, but we all benefit from a diversity of voices in the debate. And frankly he fulfilled NBC's qualifying criteria to be there, so they should let him debate.

Seems to me the mainstream media disqualified Kucinich after his UFO commment.
I think it is fair to limit the debate to canidates who have actually won delegates.
Technically, Kucinich is an "also-ran" even though he has never been in the running. The guy couldn't even win statewide in Ohio.

if "variety of voices" is the criteria why not add 25 others?

there is a huge gap between O, C and E on one hand and K on the other. it's perfectly reasonable to include those 3 and not K.

Kucinich had his shot. There were plenty of debates that included him. He didn't get votes. Sorry.

Kucinich should be at every televised debate, with his wife standing beside him at all times.

@6 - exactly.

Otherwise we'll get Nader or Bloomberg, and have yet another Republican destroying America from the White House.

At least Kucinich talks about the issues, like ... the economy ... health care ... and Iraq. Which forces the other candidates to address them.

@8 -
"if "variety of voices" is the criteria why not add 25 others?"

Why not, indeed? We can't have 25 choices in a primary?? We have to take the 3 that the media decides are the best candidates for us?

Do you not think that the American people are smart enough to consider the opinions of all 25 then make an informed choice? Actually, you may have me there. Still, most people don't know the difference between the 3, so I don't see why 25 should matter to them. It gives those who follow politics some real choices. And even better, it provides a better chance for insurgent-type candidates to overcome the media narrative (Howard Dean types).

I truly do respect and admire Dennis Kucinich, and would vote for him if given a chance, but his marketing frankly sucks.

Take the whole "Department of Peace" thing: Great idea, idiotic name. A name that is guaranteed to play into the hands of the lowest-common-denominator media culture in the US, and the idiots who are threatened by the idea of peace.

Is that fair? No. Is that right? Hell No. But that's the way the game is played.

Add a UFO sighting, and you have a new Jimmy Carter narrative for a lazy reporter pool to build on, and a corporate media who knows how dangerous Kucinich is to them, to exploit.

Sometimes you have to play your cards close to the vest to get what you want.

If I were a candidate, I'd play to the middle, kiss up to the corporations, be as non-threatening as possible. Once in office, however, I'd get all Sherman anti-trust enforcement on their ass.

Catalina -- do you want to know why his marketing sucks? He's not seriously running for president. See here:

"A reporter trying to reach the Kucinich campaign gets routed to press secretary David Bright's cell phone--which Bright rarely answers, because, as he explains in his outgoing message, he lives in 'rural Maine,' where cell phone coverage is spotty."

I mean... c'mon. Even a campaign with zero budget should have a press guy who answers the phone!!

I think Kucinich is an awesome congressman and I wish we had more like him. In some ways, I think he's even better than our own Jim McD. But his presidential campaign is basically an ego trip.

"Democracy Now" today features Kucinich as if he had been allowed to participate in the debate.

The folks who want major military contractors like General Electric deciding what messages deserve a national platform scare me just a little bit.
