Slog - Comments on Another Kennedy for Obama

I'm sitting in LAX catching up on what I missed over the course of a few hours. The biggest new thing: In addition to Caroline Kennedy, who endorsed Barack Obama today, Senator Ted Kennedy is going to endorse Obama at a rally in D.C. on Monday: The coveted endorsement is a huge blow to New York Senator Hillary Clinton, who is both a senatorial colleague and a friend of the Kennedy family. In a campaign where Clinton has trumpeted her experience over Obama's call for hope and change, the endorsement by one of the most experienced and respected Democrats in...

What's so great about the Kennedy endorsements is their timing. Caroline's on the heels of the spectacular SC victory. Then Ted's on the heels of Caroline's.

Oh, and how 'bout this? Ethel Kennedy referred to Obama a few years ago as "our next president."

BTW, here's another noteworthy endorsement, although I have to admit I haven't heard of the guy:

LOS ANGELES, CA – Congressman Xavier Becerra today endorsed Barack Obama for President, citing his ability to unite Americans to lead our country in a new direction. Becerra serves on the powerful House Ways and Means Committee and as the Assistant to the Speaker of the House is the highest ranking Latino in the House.

I'm still holding out for the biggest possible endorsement, even bigger than Oprah's. And that would be one Al Gore. I know extending an endorsement could compromise Gore's new image as an international icon who transcends the rough-and-tumble of American politics. But that's precisely why a Gore endorsement would be so much more valuable than your garden-variety politician's endorsement.

(And hey, I don't even need to say whom Gore would endorse.)

Comment by Manuel A. Tellechea

Just Like Her Daddy and Worse

The Princess Royal of the Kennedy clan, who has herself accomplished nothing in life except being born to wealth and privilege, has draped her father’s moth-eaten cloak on Barack Obama, who, in her father’s White House, would have been a footman or cook. Say what you will about Obama, he got there himself without the benefit of a rich daddy or corrupt political machine. He may be more unprepared to be president and more disastrous for this country than was JFK, but we hope, at least, that he will be impervious to “love notes” from middle-aged political camp followers who are still trying to be influential without ever being relevant.

I think Obama will be making a much bigger statement if he can win either NY or CA, plus a few swing states, e.g., MO, CO.

I don't Kennedy's endorsement for Obama will have the big bang effect today--while he has a history behind him, I think he is perceived as a relic of the past. The more important ones have come from conservative to middle of the road dems like McCaskill, Ben Nelson and Gov Napolitano-AZ.

Comment by RHETT ORACLE

Wow, at first I thought Manuel had written that mean-spirited post on Caroline who has, as a matter of fact, accomplished rather a lot in a life wherein wealth and privilege provided no antidote to multiple tragedies she has survived with grace and dignity.

As far as her endorsement is concerned, what is the point of having influence if goes unused? This nation of American-Idolized sheep needs all of the help it can get.

Ted Kennedy continues to be a great Senator and a real liberal voice in the Senate. His endorsement makes me consider Obama more favorably.

But I don't give two fucks of a cat's ass what any other Kennedy thinks about anything anywhere on earth.
