Very sad. My first thought is that her ex-husband, ex-boyfriend, an aquantance (sp?) that she refused to befriend/date has probably killed her. Very, very sad.

I live a block away and was wondering why all the police cars were there when I arrived home from work around that time.

Used to live on Denny near 15th. Even though the Hill by and large is pretty heavy for pedestrians, that stretch of 15th near East Howell from my memory is kinda barren for people walking and hanging out which would make it easy for a mugger to strike. I wonder if she was stabbed for resisting (no criticism of the victim intended) or if this was straight up cold blooded murder?

@13: I've lived in the neighborhood for the last nine years and there is actually a lot of foot traffic on that area of 15th. There's a vegan restaurant, a great teriyaki place and an admittedly creepy 7-11 among other businesses nearby; a lot of people heading to and from Safeway; and #10 bus stops on both sides of the street. Maybe it's because I don't want to think it was a random mugging so close to home, but I bet it was some jealous or pissed-off ex or present husband/boyfriend/significant other/whatever. I guess we'll find out soon enough.

It would be very unlikely for such a violent crime to be random and a stranger. The level of violence and intention required to repeatedly stab someone indicates a domestic-violence situation. A former boyfriend, husband, etc.

I came to this site because this is where I got information during the after-rave massacre. I have a 25 year old daughter, so just checking... Thought someone here might know something, but I see it's mostly dumbasses and inane comments. Sigh. My heart goes out to all her loved ones.

@6...absolutely not. If she (or a witness, or a passerby) was legally armed she could have been in position to defend herself. Promote gun safety and self defense. My condolences.

Which is more annoying: people who respond to a stabbing death with "We must ban all guns now", or people who respond with "This wouldn't happen if everyone was packing heat"?

I live nearby too. It's already moved off the front pages of the local news, so if anyone hears new information please post it.

I walked by there earlier so I wouldn't be freaked out later because I walk by there all the time. There are candles and flowers. That was a good thing to see. Lots of people called the police when it happened, which is good too, but sad someone had to go that way.

Of course the odds of this happening are likely the same or less as falling down the stairs, slipping in the bathtub, getting hit by a car, or having an aneurism. We shouldn't worry about all the things that may end us. We're all gonna go at some time. We just have to be wise and skillful, take care of ourselves, and live well while we have it.

Sorry this isn't meant to be a downer. It is jarring to see your own block as the lead story on the news though right before the New Year. All in all though we're pretty lucky compared to other places in the world.

Well, there was a murder in the CD/Capitol Hill area in the summer of 1993. Remember the semi-famous singer? I can't think of another one. Oh yes, there was a homeless man stabbed by another homeless man on Broadway like seven years ago. I think he died. I walked by the aftermath. I lived off Broadway for 8 years and I almost always felt safe walking around esp. around 7:00pm. I could not believe this. My first thought was that Capitol Hill has changed and I was wondering if more criminal types have moved in with the abundance of apartments available and the desperation of the landlords to rent post the dot com bust. Now, of course, that is just a thought (maybe even a prejudicial one without stats) and the poor woman could have been stabbed to death by a multimillionaire business man gone psycho. One thing is that I assumed a man did it. Of course, there is the possibility that a bitter ex-roommate, or female ex-lover did it. So, I best shut it and wait for more info. Heart goes out to her family. Too young to die. Do get angry when I think of the loser who decided to do that her. What the hell was that for? Can't imagine it.

This is fucking sad. Being stabbed several times...that is ruthless. Nobody deserves that. I heard that they think it might have been a transient according to eyewitness accounts....I wonder why none of the eyewitnesses tried to step in and help the poor woman. Very sad.

this woman was a friend, and a fantastic human being.
This incident is not funny, not a time for clever CLUE references. Please remember to be human-- this is great woman's life we are talking about. She lived in your neighborhood, was an avid environmentalist, and a warm and caring person. To die near your own home, where you feel the safest, in such a cruel way is horrible, and only makes it harder to imagine why she was the target. I will miss her, all of her community will miss her, show her some dignity.

I stopped by her memorial today again. I am just so perplexed by how this could have happened. I read one report that this man was hiding in her doorway. Well, the doorway is not shallow and is at least 8 steps off the street and very visible. I rewalked her steps from Safeway to her home, imagined her thoughts, on her way home to get ready for a party. Imagining her fear and her last thoughts as she lie there and waited for paramedics to arrive. This is a desolate area at night. It's far enough away from the bustle of 15th for someone to get away with this. There are not many people walking withing this block at the same time. The whole thing reminded me of Mia Zapata. Thankfully this woman was not raped like Mia. I think about this woman daily as I also live in this neighborhood. It was only a year ago when the after rave party shooting happened only a few blocks in the other direction from my home. It definately brings an awareness. I would advise anyone that hasn't already done so, to take a self defense class at Home Alive.
