Slog - Comments on Washington Doesn't Matter?

There's been lots of talk (including from the likes of me) about how Washington State is unlikely to matter much in the process of picking a Democratic nominee, except as a place for candidates to round up big donations. Included in the evidence of this: No candidate has opened a campaign office here. Until now. A well-placed source tells me that this week, Barack Obama will become the first presidential candidate to open a field office in Washington State. What does this mean? Maybe it's the Obama campaign's way of getting a jump on organizing for the the Washington Democratic...

I'm positive The Stranger News Dept. would make a sufficient Democratic campaign office. Oh wait, that would mean that we might have to get involved as opposed to being commentators. Who do 'we' endorse anyway? Are we joining the waffling tradition in the meantime? Long live the Clintonian buffoonery!

For the Dems, I don't think we do matter. But if different GOP candidates win in Iowa and New Hampshire, or the same one wins in both but loses in South Carolina, I believe we'll see an awful lot of GOP staffers flooding the streets of Eastern Washington.

I know that my voice in particular won't matter for picking the Dem candidate though, because after the way I was treated at the '04 caucus, I have zero interest in attending in '08.

1. YOUR voice won't matter if you don't go to your Democratic caucus on 2/9.

Know where it is?

2. Obviously Washington State doesn't matter. One campaign office, woo-hoo.

Many Dem canidates have visited all 99 counties in iowa by now. About 2/3 of likely caucus goers there say they have met the candidates!

Comment by Jon Morgan

If you want to talk about not mattering, look at the fact that 572,000 District of Columbia residents (more than Wyoming has and almost as many as Vermont) are tax-paying US citizens who have no vote in Congress. WA doesn't matter in the primaries and caucuses...neither do 46 other states, or the District of Columbia. At least we get representation for our taxation instead of getting slapped around as Congress' bitch.

WA didn't have to fight to get a state quarter. DC did--for 10 years. Our municipal budgets don't have to be approved by Congress, nor do we get school vouchers foisted on us or our medical marijuana or domestic partnership laws blocked by right-wing Southerners.
