This Week in Sensual Keytars

posted by on December 19 at 13:50 PM

Every time I think I’ve moved on to Amy Sedaris or Violet Affleck, Snoop Dogg comes back with some shit like this and reminds me why he’s my favorite living person.

Or, as my friend Meagan so elegantly put it:

HAAAAAAAIIIRRRRRDOOOOOOOOOOOO

eeeeeeeewwwwwwwwwwwww.... why is everyone on teh internets spooging over this fucking song?

that tacky vocal effect sounded cheesy and dated when cher and kid rock used it a decade ago. gross.

besides, snoop dogg is a misogynistic pig.

Sometimes you gotta just let the misogyny go and enjoy the hairdo.

"We goin' to the mall, we goin' out to eeeeeeeat."

That's pure poetry, hater.

yeah, snoop dogg is misogynistic because he likes to fuck women. right. oh, and peter frampton used that "tacky vocal effect" long before kid rock, ass.

its not a great song but it is entertaining.

@1 You are a retarded asshole. WATCH THE VIDEO. Mute it if you must. But don't deny that this is one of the best videos ever made.

Also, don't mock the vocoder.

@4:
And Jeff Beck before him.

it's not a vocoder its a talk box. vocoders are totally different.

Will ya'all stop fighting and just love on Snoop?

kthnkxbye.

Posted by *gong* | December 19, 2007 2:10 PM

@8 Maybe so, but "vocoder" is a much better word than "talk box."

i've watched the video. it's not a vocoder, and i'm not an ass. it's the talk box. vocoders rock. talk box is fucking cheese. and it's not to the same effect as frampton - which was cheesy enough - it's as cher and kid rock used it. and no matter who used it first, it's dated and tacky.

he's not misogynistic for fucking women, he's misogynistic for calling them hoes and tricks but fucking them anyway.

@6:
Yes Meagan. If you had bothered to read the foot notes in your wikipedia link, you would know that by now.

Does the Stranger need a new music editor??????????

@10:
"Maybe so..." ???????????????

blech, Snoop needs to go back to rapping. It's time for another N.W.A reunion

WTF?!?! Snoop used to be hard. Who fed him the acid?

Posted by shadowdaddy | December 19, 2007 2:35 PM
16

@12 and 13:

"Meagan" @8 and 10 is not "Megan" the music staff writer for the stranger.

@10: there is a big difference between the talk box and the vocoder. they work in different ways and produce different sounds.

for good vocoder listen to giorgio moroder. it's more robotic sounding. talk box is manipulated by the shape of the mouth then processed through he synth. vocoder is sung into and processed at the same point.

11, 12, 13: It's true. I don't know how to read, or the difference between the vocoder and a talk box. If only this were a crime for which I could be punished by death. But at least I know that Snoop was in NWA (14). Also, why do you love question marks so much?????????????????????

Posted by Meagan | December 19, 2007 2:40 PM

Oh my God, take my computer away. WASN'T IN NWA! WASN'T!!

Posted by Meagan | December 19, 2007 2:41 PM

@13 re: vocoder vs. talkbox. i'm fairly certain a vocoder was used to create the effect, though, in the video, a talk box is pictured. i'd doubt keytars were actually used to produce any of the music, either.

Posted by infrequent | December 19, 2007 2:45 PM
20

actually.... it's the sound of the vocoder. The talkbox tube is a prop, methinks.

Posted by DEOHDOUBLEGEE | December 19, 2007 2:48 PM
21

Snoop was a part of the last NWA reunion

WHOA! ya'll are fast with the facts. I'll go back to lurking.

Posted by DEOHDOUBLEGEE | December 19, 2007 2:53 PM
23

God forbid anything in the video should be considered "cheesy" or "tacky".

On an unrelated note, why can't I find a good version of "While my Keytar Gently Weeps"?

Posted by NapoleonXIV | December 19, 2007 2:53 PM
24

@16:
Well, in "Meagan"'s blog, she states something about the fact that she is somewhat associated with the Stranger.

Posted by Hal | December 19, 2007 2:53 PM
25

@21, that probs because Eazy E is hella dead from the AIDZ

Posted by Meagan | December 19, 2007 2:55 PM

And to think this Affleck just escaped an afternoon of Karoake to realize music is our life ...

Why are we fighting? Snoop is trying to bring us together.

Posted by Meagan | December 19, 2007 2:58 PM
28

pretty sure it's talk box, but played through a synth rather than guitar.

Posted by brandon | December 19, 2007 3:00 PM
29

@27 word. This cut rules, but everybody knows that the job of the vocoder is to make bad singers sound like good singers.

Posted by Jimmy Legs | December 19, 2007 3:02 PM

@11, cher didnt use a talkbox or vocoder in her song "Do you believe". her producer just slapped tons of auto tune on her voice in pro-tools.

@19:
Are you trying to say that Snoop doesn't actually play the Keytar?????

NO!!!!! Say it ain't so!!!!!!

Posted by Hal | December 19, 2007 3:04 PM

@24: I write for the Stranger. Meagan is my pal. She came to an event with me and chatted with a mentally ill veteran. I'm not sure how you got from there to "music editor," but the point is that some of us enjoy Mr. Dogg and his hat and his incredible music video.

Posted by Lindy | December 19, 2007 3:04 PM

explain how a talk box harmonizes the voice like in the song. thank you.

the job of a vocoder is to simply alter the original sound of the voice. many vocoders have autoharmonizing function in it, over harmonizing effects, filter sweeps, bit reduction, ring mod, etc etc.

a vocoder is a splendid thing.

Posted by Bellevue Ave | December 19, 2007 3:08 PM

30 - whatever the tools, the net result is identical to what snoop did here, no? sounds the same to me anyway. but then again i'm a retarded asshole.

Posted by brandon | December 19, 2007 3:09 PM
35

the cher trick was auto tune, but done intentionally to sound synthetic.

the vocoder and talk-box can sound very similar at times. but the clear enunciation (less possible with a talk-box) and harmonizing leads me to believe a vocoder had to be used, even though a talk-box appears in the video.

the talk-box appears in the video because it's cheezy, yes, like the keytar, but mostly because you cannot recognize a vocoder in a video.

@31 i know! wha?!?!

here you go, peeps - talk box via a synth:

http://www.curbly.com/Chrisjob/posts/3288-A-Merry-Talk-Box-Christmas-

now can we stop all the fussin' and a-feudin'?

Posted by brandon | December 19, 2007 3:19 PM
37

of course you can use a talk-box with a synth -- you can use one with any signal. that proves nothing about what snoop's song uses.

Posted by infrequent | December 19, 2007 3:22 PM
38

Most recently, rapper Snoop Dogg made use of a talk box in the live version of his new single "Sensual Seduction" (the talkbox is usually played by DJ Quik). In the regular version a MicroKORG is used instead of the talkbox.

Posted by infrequent | December 19, 2007 3:26 PM
39

actually i was referring to what cher used, which is - according to the link, anyway - talk box.

well whatever, i officially strike everything i've said above. snoop is a genius, eons ahead of his time, and a paragon of virtue. please go about your business!

Yeah, I've decided that I love that damned video. I love oldskool Prince and MJ, so it's hard to resist it.

i dont trust curbly as a source on vocoders or talk boxes.

Posted by Bellevue Ave | December 19, 2007 3:37 PM

i don't trust myself on the subject, either. just pulling shit out of my ass here. who knew this was such a sensitive topic?

telling someone something that isn't the truth is child abuse.

i hate electronic music/audio production because it attracts the most nerdy, nit picky, aspergers afflicted people in the world. especially if they are white.

Perhaps we should discuss something less controversial, such as Whaa-Whaa pedals.
