The British Empire Strikes Back

posted by on December 14 at 12:49 PM

We are not dead yet!

BERLIN — Overcoming earlier misgivings about its direction and leadership, the World Bank said Friday it had raised $25.1 billion in aid for the world’s poorest countries, a record sum that includes donations by China and Egypt, nations that were once recipients of such aid.

For the first time, Britain overtook the United States as the biggest donor, a highly symbolic change given Washington’s traditional influence in choosing the bank’s president and charting its policies.

America, recall these proud words:

This royal throne of kings, this sceptred isle,
This earth of majesty, this seat of Mars,
This other Eden, demi-paradise,
This fortress built by Nature for herself
Against infection and the hand of war,
This happy breed of men, this little world,
This precious stone set in the silver sea,
Which serves it in the office of a wall
Or as a moat defensive to a house,
Against the envy of less happier lands, -
This blessed plot, this earth, this realm, this England.

(The lion looks a little like me.)

Much as I am proud for having served in a Royal Regiment with the Queen as my commander (true story, out of town when she visited and everyone else in my unit got medals) ...

I think it's more that we in the US have fallen so far in the level of our charitable worldwide actions at the government level than any other first-world nation, to the point where our miniscule 0.01 percent is just way too small compared to their more traditional 0.1 percent.

How far we've fallen ...

Is Britain going to be able to pick the leader of the World Bank now?

No, but they can Knight him ... (and Charles does remind me of the lion)

Are they counting the subsidy they give Scotland?

Posted by BB | December 14, 2007 2:20 PM

No, that's part of the UK, BB. If it's not Scottish, it's carpe diem!

Up the Provos!

You're Zimbabwean, Charles. Do you really feel that attached to your evil jug-eared kidney-eating imperialist overlords?

Posted by tsm | December 14, 2007 2:44 PM

Screw the World Bank.

Do people really think what the World Bank does is "charity"?
