Teddy “Muhammad” Teacher Pardoned

posted by on December 3 at 14:43 PM

The British schoolteacher jailed in Sudan for allowing her 7-year-old pupils to name a class teddy bear Muhammad was pardoned today by the Sudanese president and left for England later in the evening.

President Omar al-Bashir made the decision after meeting with two Muslim members of Britain’s House of Lords, the upper house of Parliament.

The British prime minister, Gordon Brown, said he was “delighted and relieved” at the news and that “common sense has prevailed.”

The bear, who is not a British subject, has been sentenced to death for his part in the incident.

they should probably stone the children who named the bear, though. just to be on the safe side.

Maybe a nice auto-de-fe for the teddy bear is in order? That or public lashings? They can beat the stuffing out of the idolatrous bear ...

Christianity smiles with amused condescension upon the name for my ursine pal: Gladleigh, the Cross-Eyed Bear. My teacher awaits her properly-deserved garrotting.

Yes, how nice to know that justice can be procured only if you have two Lords to intercede on your behalf. Meanwhile, the other 40 million people in Sudan get to suck dust.

@4 - well, then, so long as the bear doesn't try to visit America, that should be fine.

And good point, Fnarf.

Never mind the insipid writing of the joyous event of "common sense prevailing." What probably happened was that the Sudanese president did some calculation of how many western corporations invest in his country, saw a certain revenue stream potentially leaving his coffers, and made nice with the British.

@Paul

How is what you wrote any different than "common sense prevailing?"

I mean, I think we all understand what the common sense was here.
