The violence has abated -- for the time being -- because Moqtada al-Sadr called off his troops -- for the time being. It has nothing to do with what the U.S. did or didn't do.

Well, it's good to know that those ungrateful Iraqizoids are all united in one area: They hate the US!

"Iraqis of all sectarian and ethnic groups believe that the U.S. military invasion is the primary root of the violent differences among them, and see the departure of "occupying forces" as the key to national reconciliation, according to focus groups conducted for the U.S. military last month.

We only blew up their country, tortured and killed about a zillion of them and set up an SS-style occupation and puppet government where anyone can be killed at any time with no accountability. The NERVE of some people!

We also showed everyone all over the world that everything our country claims to stand for is a hypocritical pack of lies. Whatta hat-trick!

Not to mention the fact that, as Sullivan alludes, the reduction in violence has had virtually no positive effect in terms of the Iraqi government getting its act together, which, or so we were led to believe, was one of the primary rationalizations for implementing the surge in the first place.

Funny, I thought only authoritarian dictorships issued claims that are openly false:

"Asked whether the United States wanted to keep the door open to maintaining its troops in Iraq longer, U.S. Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad said the extension is at the request of the Iraqi government "representing the will of the Iraqi people."

Meanwhile...

"Continuing bloodshed illustrates the tough task ahead. On Tuesday, at least 11 people were killed when a suicide bomber blew himself up in a cafe in Abbara village, about 45 miles north of Baghdad, police said. At least 18 others were wounded.

In central Baqouba, a suicide car bomb exploded at a police checkpoint, killing two and wounding at least 15 others, police said.

In northern Iraq, insurgents attacked guards protecting an oil pipeline about 50 miles south of Mosul, killing six of the guards, police said."

No mention that you supported this war Dan.

Why not? Just to scared to admit what a POS you are, and how you drank the cum from Bushes cock like a 20 rock whore?

Andrew Sullivan supported the invasion also. Whatever he says now is farting to me.

Yes, the US won the war. About two years ago. The OCCUPATION (which is what this should have been called for the time after that)... not going so well...

Ivan @4 wins the prize. The relative reduction in violence has nothing whatsoever to do with a handful of extra US troops, and everything to do with Moqtada al-Sadr calling off the dogs. At least for now. At one snap of his fingers, the violence will escalate to horrendous levels again, surge or no surge.

Andy Niable #10 (clever name, BTW), you have the right idea. It is an occupation. However, your timing is off. Baghdad fell, the Iraq army (such as it was) was defeated, and Saddam had gone into hiding by the end of April, 2003. It has been an occupation (not a war) for 4+ years, not just 2.
