Should the new building have a similarly modest title? Perhaps "The Lower 48"?

So another fucking rat trap bites the dust. Gee, I'm crying crocodile tears.

Thank God. I fucking hate that place. It's a goddamn eyesore. I'm looking forward to seeing it replaced with anything, provided it's not one of those aluminum siding buildings that look like the home of the richest man in the favela.

This is good news.

The upper quadrant of Pike/Pine never had any good housing. Two years ago, we were looking to rent up there and I was surprised to find only like four buildings with any kind of apartments; probably like 60 units in all for that whole area!

PS: What is with the old school cars parked in front of the building? How old is that first picture, anyway?

Those photos date way back to 2 p.m. I think the old cars must belong to the guy with the sign--they each wear "Protect Life" stickers.

lets move all these scummy places off my hill.
(though the pro-life crap stinks like yesterdays fish)

Ah, so the "Undre Arms" is destined to become the razed "Arms". Clearly, given the religious sensibilities of the owner, the new, taller building will most likely be named the "Uplifted Arms".

And the question burning in my mind is: will the new building have some sort of paean to the several decrepit and decaying trailers parked behind it?

Oh man... i love those "Protect Human Life" stickers. Nothing good comes out of those stickers.

They send the same signal that old guys with hats in station wagons send. "I am a very slow, very bad driver. I am also fairly insane. However, please protect human life."

What's with the "pro-life" cark anyway? I'm pro-life (with the possible exception of the dickhead who just trolled all the boards), and pro-abortion too. Killing a fucking blastocyte doesn't exactly qualify as "anti-life."

Poor Christians, still clinging to Thomas Aquinas' thoroughly debunked notion that every blastocyst contains a teeny-tiny, fully formed human being inside, just waiting to grow and burst out of the womb like an alien parasite.

Blastocyte, hell. Official Catholic theology still holds that every SPERM is a fully formed human. They haven't come to grips with the existence of the egg yet. A woman is just a warm place to hold them while they grow.

Abortion doesnt kill children; abortion kills fetuses.

"Abortion doesn't kill children. Abortion kills fetuses." Man you should go to work for The Stranger. This type of empty valueless snarky fuck everyone there is no price to high to pay (by other people of course) for me to show the world just how fucking cool I am attitude is valued over there. Is there anything meaningful to you man? Is there any there there? Do you have anything at all, besides this attempt to be a poor man's Dan Savage to offer the world. Savage supported a war in Iraq just because he knew most people would expect him, to oppose it. Now after much carnage he has changed his mind. Don't you want to be more than that? Don't you want to be more than a snarky superficial "hipster?"

All this talk of killing, can't we stop the killing and start the loving? The Undre Arms is the breeding place of love.

Interesting...

Tell me more, Earth being, of this human thing you call "love". How to I get some of it? I want some of your Earth "love" and, though I do not understand this new feeling you have inspired in me, I want it now.

Also, what is this thing you Earth men call "snark"? Would I like it? Teach me to "snark" and I will be your "love" slave.

@ 14, I know Im not supposed to feed the trolls, but being called a "a poor man's Dan Savage" might be the nicest thing someone has said about me in long time.

Oh, come on, Dan feeds the trolls more than any of us. Elenchos, if you wannabe snarky, you've gotta change your name to whatever-the-fuck-smegma I used back there.

The building has charm and character, so naturally it has to be killed.

Not to despair. The owner and a salvage company will undoubtedly come to a financial agreement at the appropriate time on Lazarussing away the best bits of that moribund building.

That's too bad, I called 3 weeks ago and they told me a 1 bedroom was $625 - Pimps up and Ho's down, one less place for affordable housing on Capitol Hill.

I was sad to see the dreaded sign on the Undre Arms today. There's something very charming about that little rat trap. OTOH, this is one development I really can't argue with, as the building looks ready to fall down on its own.

I literally just moved out of that building last month! I had wondered how it didn't get caught up in the condo boom, given the nice location and triangular block its on in between union and madison. When i first moved there I got alot of "you moved THERE?!!?" reactions, but it was close to all the lovely drinking establishments in the cap hill area.

also, I didn't have shag carpet!! but i did have a claw tub, which is really less enjoyable than a modern one, which is generally much larger and more comfortable.

That looks like a pretty nice '53 Caddy parked out front. Tear down the building, save the car.

Abortion is a sick, disgusting, and depraved tragedy no matter how you spin it, but the greater tragedy is the government saying you can't do it.

Do any of the stranger staff go to these design review meetings?

They exist for a reason. To help the community shape itself. If the stranger were to do more reporting on these meetings, I suspect more people would attend them.

You can see how public comments help shaped the design of the new development next to The Press Apartments, for example.

So if you care enough about your neighborhood, don't bitch about it on a forum, get involved!

Brave Republican Troll is on a smear campaign against Dan Savage today. He doesn't care about the children dying in Iraq. All he cares about is the fact that Savage supported the war at some point in the past.

My disgust cannot be overstated. When all you care about is smearing people who disagree with you while overlooking the suffering and death we are causing - and even supporting it - you are a lousy human being.

My apologies for the repeat posting. I'm hunting Troll. Big, fat, blubbering Republican Troll.

That ".com" sign went up *way* longer than a few years ago. I used to work across the street in the late 1990's and one day, in the middle of the internet boom, it just popped up. It's been there for at least 8 years now.

that's so odd....I drove by there a few days ago and thought to myself, that it was strange that this building hadn't been torn down yet...

I love this building; it's so old school/film noiry. It looks like a setting in a James Cain novel. I acknowledge it's a dilapidated dump, but it's a dilapitdated dump with great character.

R.I.P. Undre Arms.

That is not a 53 Caddy, and those cars do NOT support the pro life landlord, they just have some of the LAST fucking parking spots in Seattle.

I know MANY women who have enjoyed the company of a certain fine pal of mine who just moved out of the Undre Arms. It's proximity to the plethora of(alcohol serving) establishments has served us all well at times and has saved many of us a drunken unsafe walk (or drive) home. I loved that place actually, it had character. Its a shame that it will be replaced with yet another fucking boring, cardboard cutout copy of what Capitol Hill is becoming. Damn those yuppies. Damn them all to Hell. Go back to Belltown and Bellevue already!
