Re: Pearl Harbor Day

posted by on December 7 at 11:57 AM

And tomorrow, Dec. 8, is RIP John Lennon day, which gives me the opportunity to Slog a pet peeve 24 hours in advance.

John Lennon was already dead on Dec. 8, 1980. Reagan had just been elected. The times they were a changin’ … back. I was a precocious kid on that day, and even I understood the grating irony of America’s fawning coverage of all those yuppies (a brand new word that year) who had voted for Reagan and were holding candles and shit for Lennon—as if a world leader had just died.

Lennon was not a world leader in 1980. He was nothing in 1980.

And the best song on that album he put out in 1980 was “Kiss Kiss Kiss” by Yoko.

Stupid post. What a dick. People missed John Lennon because they loved his legacy. Not because his new album was so fucking great. How is that difficult to understand? You need to do some growing up.

You must be one of those "what have you done for me lately" kind of guys... damn!

Lennon was nothing in 1980? Wow! Your definition of "nothing" is much different than mine.

This is a total troll post, but that doesn't mean I'm not going to put in my fuck you.

"Lennon was nothing in 1980." Fuck you, Josh. He was a husband and a father and working artist. The media's coverage of his assassination may have been dumb and hypocritical, but the statement "Lennon was nothing in 1980" is the stupidest sentence you've ever written.

I like Yoko, and actually last Thanksgiving I entered into a heated debate with my brother-in-law about Yoko's singing, but it's hard to imagine why you think "Kiss, kiss, kiss" is the best song on Double Fantasy. IMO, every Lennon song is significantly better than the Yoko Ono songs, even if most of them are far from his best. "Woman" and "I'm Losing You" stick out in my mind, but I know there are other good ones.

It was Just Like Starting Over, Woman. Nobody Told Me there'd be days like these.

The Beattles and John Lennon are over rated. I'll be happy when the last two kick the bucket.

They aren't overrated, you just happen to be in the minority that dislikes them.

People don't hold candles for dead world leaders. They hold candles for dead spiritual leaders. Lennon was a spiritual leader for millions.

The fact that these millions were for the most part stupid and crazy doesn't change that fact.

Lennon's murder was horribly traumatic for me, because I was at that time both stupid and crazy, and soon headed back to the psych ward. His death was the first step towards a more realistic assessment of Lennon's legacy, which, it is now clear, is the most over-inflated of all the Beatles. He hasn't aged well at all. But Double Fantasy wasn't THAT bad a record; it certainly was better than most of his early solo junk.

Next Josh is going to tell us that New York sucks and people should get over it. Religions don't work like that, guy.

Well, I was going to say "fuck off, Josh," but clearly I've been beaten to the punch.

And for the record, Starting Over is an f'ing awesome song.

I think he was always nothing. But, then, you know, I think they're overrated as a band, too. It's not like they were Weezer or anything.

I am in total agreement with Schmader @4.

Jesus Christ, Josh. Fucking pull it together over there.

Next up on Trolling for Outrage Theatre:

Kittens: Hate 'em!
Abraham Lincoln: Overrated.
Stuff you like: Not as cool as stuff I like. (Could your intractable moronism be to blame?)
Your Mom: Yeah, I did her.

Fuck you, Yoko haters.

Her new album is BRILLIANT ... and she even does her own rendition of "Kiss Kiss Kiss"

Kwab said it perfectly. What the hell is going on? Is it hater holiday there, and the rest of us didn't get the memo?

Meh. So he doesn't like the Beatles. So he doesn't get why anybody should care that john Lennon was assassinated -- or at least gets it but thinks the reasoning is flawed.

I think the Beatles rule. But his personal dislike/apathy concerning John Lennon's demise is simple opinion, and does really warrant a "fuck you".

Since the super-trendy crowd (to which you clearly aspire) changes its loyalties on a year-by-year (if not day-by-day) basis, you probably wouldn't understand that people love(d) Lennon for more than what he accomplished (or didn't) in a single album/arbitrary timeframe.

I remember when John Lennon gave Josh some bad acid tabs.

Ever since he's been on the warpath.

Look, dude, it was a mistake. He's dead. Get over it. Ignore the brown crawly bugs in your hair for once and move on.

"Watching The Wheels" is brilliant. At age 40 Lennon found inner peace. If that made him "already dead" then kill me now.

It's awful that Lennon wasted the last five years of his life being a stay-at-home father, when that job belongs to a woman. Thanks for putting him in his place, Josh.
