2008 Perhaps You Missed This Over the Weekend
posted by December 17 at 10:00 AM
onThe big political news of the weekend came when The Des Moines Register, the major newspaper in Iowa, endorsed Hillary Clinton.
The choice, then, comes down to preparedness: Who is best prepared to confront the enormous challenges the nation faces — from ending the Iraq war to shoring up America’s middle class to confronting global climate change? The job requires a president who not only understands the changes needed to move the country forward but also possesses the discipline and skill to navigate the reality of the resistant Washington power structure to get things done.
That candidate is New York Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton.
Unlike most endorsements, this one might actually matter. Already, it’s helped the Clinton campaign stoke a new storyline: That after seeming unsteady for a few weeks, Clinton is back in it in Iowa. (Which she’ll be touring incessantly before the Jan. 3 caucuses in what Ben Smith is calling the Hill-o-Copter, but not before appearing this morning on all six major morning shows.)
Then there’s this, from Friday’s Charlie Rose:
Which has people saying this, among other things.
However: Edwards is still on the cover of Newsweek, which sees him as the “sleeper” candidate.
And the Obama-rising theme continues to produce big pieces, with The New York Times explaining Obama’s new confidence, Rolling Stone’s Matt Taibbi writing about “Obama’s Moment,” and, of course, this piece.

What the hell is he even talking about?
A Hillary Nomination means a GOP win in November.
Didn't that same paper also endorse senile, pandering old fool John "gay sweaters!" McCain?
If that's not a cry their paper is totally irrelevant, then I don't know what is.
No more Clintons. Edwards/Obama '08!
from ending the Iraq war to shoring up America’s middle class to confronting global climate change
Not Hillary Clinton, who supported the Iraq War and refuses to recant that; whose health care plan is an industry-friendly interventionism that will only serve to raise prices much, much higher (who's gonna feel that?); and who has been absent for the last four environment-related votes.
Whatever.
I'd still vote for a crusty sock over any Republican candidate.
So long as that crusty sock isn't Ralph Nader.
I love him!
Yes, @2. And with Ron Paul being the 6 million dollar man...
@4 - I agree with you, except I don't think Obama or Edwards are any better. I know, I know ... Obama opposed the Iraq war from the beginning, but there isn't much difference between he and Clinton moving forward.
I agree with the Des Moines Register endorsement in that Clinton is the most prepared and qualified candidate. She runs circles around Edwards and Obama in terms of intellect. They've got her beat in the charisma department, but that's about it.
That Jack and Jill blog is my new fave.
This was especially tasty:

The most amazing thing to me about clips like this with Clinton has nothing to do with his politics. Just listen to him speak. Then ask yourself this question - what do you think GWB would sound like sitting there talking? (Or, rather, attempting to talk.) It's rather staggering, the more you think about it.
That's exactly what I thought, Wowza! Like him or not, Clinton is just a smart man. There's no way we'll see Dubya that at ease with facts and ideas on the Charlie Rose show or any interview longer than 5 mins. I know we joke about how dumb Bush is all the time, but it still stuns me every time I hear Clinton speak how stupid Bush really is by comparison....
I agree with @5, but I'd do a write in for Ron Paul for RTID Board Chair.
