Likely it's a dominance display, as it is for make (and female) dogs. My unaltered male who is second in the dog hierarchy humps #3 (also unaltered) any time he feels he needs to reinforce his dominance, and my ALTERED male who is #1 in the hierarchy humps the other two every few days or so. Of course, there's never any actual penetration. Dominant females hump lesser females and lesser males too.

Pack hierarchy is fluid and situational (except I am always the boss!) and I let the dogs figure it out with very little intervention. But it's not sex and I wouldn't call it "homosexual behavior".

I have had pets all my life, so I am definately aware of the whole "Dominance Humping" thing [you should see a 20-pound dog try it on a 60-pound dog - it's like "I'm in total charge of this leg!"]

But I have also had a VERY GAY dog. He didn't hump for dominance - he went into Heat when exposed to unaltered [not castrated] male dogs. It was unmistakable mating behavior - the other males always looked so confused. And he totally ignored females when they went into heat. So he was definately a homosexual dog. Dunno why they alternated, but it looked kind of desultory, you know? I mean, if there was really something going on you'd think it'd take a LITTLE longer... I believe you about the gay dog--actually, my neutered male appears to be sexy to some other male dogs, and they try to flirt with him (he's not interested and gets very annoyed).

And Richard, the #3 dog will be neutered as soon as he's fully mature--I'm waiting for his chest to drop, hoping it will pull his shoulders down a bit (when you show dogs in dog sports this can be important!) #2 in the hierarchy is staying intact per his breeder's request, at least for now.

Among lions, it's the quantity and not the quality. Lions have very short copulations many times with a mate over the period of a few days, often as many as twenty to thirty. On average each copulation only lasts about thirty seconds.

Interestingly, the Lion has a very small penis compared to it's body. I'd be fairly surprised if the lion on the bottom even felt very much. The willingness to accept such an act passively though, would certainly indicate something other than normal was going on.
