Slog - Comments on Oh, Goody

No jokes, no patter, no... clips from movies? Damn, the Oscars are going to be a four-hour train wreck this year. Dick Clark Productions and the Foreign Press Assocation had sought a waiver from the guild's strike rules to allow writers to work on the awards show, to be aired on NBC Jan. 13. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences had asked the guild for permission to use clips from movies and past awards programs that could be shown during the awards shows on ABC in February. However, Patric M. Verrone, president of the Writers Guild of America,...

in a trainwreck way, I'm curious to see what Leno will pull off. he used to be a comedian himself, and i remember he wrote material himself that was funnier than his writers, as far as i recall.

maybe he'll go all bob saget on everybody.

possibly, he'll just make a lot of writers' strike jokes he wrote, then have a boring show as usual.

more likely, the latter but using scabs as writers.

You mean there'll be no god-awful pre-award patter recited in a near-monotone by glassy-eyed actors on their fifth glass on Cristal? Oh yeah. That's gonna suck. That's always been the highlight of the Oscars for me: people reading off of a teleprompter.

i hope the writer's strike continues. i love the idea of people slowly turning away from their tv s because it's nothing but lame reality shows and re-runs, and starting to pay attention to the things which really matter, like their lives, their children's lives, and the state of the world. it's great timing.

Wait--where's the logic in that assumption? If we eliminate the banter, the jokes, the clips, etc--wouldn't the Oscars be mercifully SHORTER than a FOUR-HOUR trainwreck, and might just be a 2 hour series of silly, extemporaneous thank-you speeches?

I'll posit that the Oscars will be a one hour trainwreck this year. Without the pointless scripted bits and clip montages, there's no reason to have it run any longer than that.
