Obviously this means that all the men (and boys) who were petitioning that the Boy Scouts lift their ban on gay men and athiests are pedophiles and rapists.

Clearly.

Wait, they banned gays and atheists? Other than the typical bigotry, how are they supposed to know if someone is gay and/or atheist if they can't spot a 64-year-old pedophile?

schadenfreude has never been so satisfying.

they make the parents of the kids sign a statement that they have some sort of faith, they don't really do the same thing for teh gays. so they really try and keep out atheists more than gay people, and really they don't care about gay scouts just gay scout leaders. presumably because if the child is gay it makes the abuse a little easier

Evans was upset about losing that dock because he was using the Farallon as his own personal brothel.

I'm sorry, but wouldn't that imply he was at least paying them?

Just sayin'.

3 - until you realize that, you know, some kids were MOLESTED.

"...lewd and lascivious acts...oral copulation...penetration with a foreign object...showing harmful material"

Wow, it sounds like they're reading from Michael Jackson's diary. Unlike Jacko though, he probably won't be found Not Guilty Due To Celebrity.

penetration with a foreign object of a minor? That has got to be the creepiest sounding charge ever...

Mike in MO @ 8,

Nah, that's got to be "assault with a concrete dildo" from The Naked Gun.

He may be a Goddamned whoremonger, but at least he's not gay!

you american's are cuckoo, I was in cubs in the UK and cubs / scouts in Canada, not once was there a mention of faith / god / religion in my years there.

@8 - Yeah ... somebody had to think that up and put it in the books as a specific crime. Because, "lewd and lascivious acts with a minor" didn't cover it.

@4 Hey, I'm an atheist and an Eagle Scout. So nyaahhhh!

Our troop was sponsored by a Lutheran church, which I did not attend. I never had to sign anything declaring a faith, and neither did my parents.

Granted, at the time, I didn't exactly go around saying "There is no God!", so I'd say it was a "don't ask, don't tell" policy more than anything. Basically the same as their pedophile policy, apparently.

@14 i was a scout too, and my parents had to sign a statement that they had some faith in something, but it really is mostly ignored especially for the scouts themselves rather than the leaders

Yes, @12, SOME Americans are cuckoo. The rest of us just sit back blithely and watch society crumble.

Back in the day my little boy was asked to 'sign the pledge.' As difficult as it was, I had to deny him entry into an organization that discriminates based on a specific dogma and on the exclusion of humans who do not fit the only-approved-sexuality criteria. Little did I know that I was likely sparing him from molestation too!!

Ah, nothing like good old-fashioned family values...

The Boy Scouts have SHIPS?

To clarify some confusion:

* The Supreme Court challenge was over whether the city could refuse to offer descriminating non-profits the same benefits they do for others.

* Scouts verbally promise to do their duty to God and country. It's not an option to choose one and not the other. Most groups don't require anyone to sign a statement, but the membership application requires that members subscribe to the beliefs of the organization.

* Cub Scouts are organized in groups called Packs. Boy Scouts are organized in groups called Troops. Sea Scouts are organized in groups called Ships. Sometimes Sea Scouts Ships have no boat, sometimes they have a 100' ex-Coast Guard vessel that sleeps 20. Looks like the Berkeley group had a ~40 foot yacht.

* Sexual abuse is not supposed to happen in Scouting. The first rule they teach leaders is that there must always be two adults present when a Scout is with a leader.

@17 Sea Scouts is part of the Explorer program and allows girls to participate. Obviously, Sea Scouts is largely restricted to the coasts.

@4 They really, really, really are not bothering with trying to keep out the gays, at least judging from the ship the kid I mentor is a part of. The kid is super gay, has at least one other gay shipmate, and has been carrying out the proud naval tradition of rum, sodomy, and the lash. Well, at least the sodomy part.

And honestly, there's no way they're not gonna get tons of gay boys, given that their dress blues are a Navy uniform.

Those kids probably were probably out smoking pot because I think its legal in Berkeley and they were late for dinner with their parents. But how do you get out of trouble? You blame someone to cover your own ass. Or The gay & lesbian city council of Berkeley set this whole thing up. Government is very powerfull and when they want you out, they will do anything...Look at imminent domain..The government can take your house, even if you own it and sell it to a developer to build condos.
