Nordstrom’s Racks

posted by on December 13 at 10:43 AM

Coming down the escalator at Nordstrom last night we encountered…

Nordnudes.jpg

…hordes of glossy nude-but-nippleless female torsos. I didn’t have a problem with it, Nordstrom, although my ten year-old was thoroughly scandalized. But you must be getting complaints from more conservative parents. Your store is crawling with kids, Santa has taken up residence on the corner, and you fill the first floor with unclothed, headless torsos? Again, I don’t have a problem with it. But your typical customer must, right?

I used to go to Nordstrom when I lived closer to one. It made the mall almost tolerable. We had a Marshall Field's until the great satan (aka Macy's) bought it. As we all know, Macy's has no class. The unclothed headless torsos at Macy's would have nipples for sure.

At a mall in Indianapolis a couple weeks ago there was a store with a half-naked female mannekin in the window. I thought, "well, that won't be there long"... A week later, same mall, same window, same nippleless torso. I don't care if it stays there, but I was surprised nobody complained.

But god forbid I should hold hands with my partner in the mall!!

Dan, you still my boy, but you are way too obsessed with sex and erotica.

Isn't being obsessed with sex and erotica how Dan makes his living?

I call this the "Beowulf effect." Apparently if there aren't visible nipples, it's not nudity. As Wendy O. Williams has famously illustrated.

What an uptight society we've become. Even if we're not offended by something, it still makes us feel uncomfortable because it might be offensive to someone else.

I find the pink bags far more offensive.

I can only hope that this is the first sign of a rapidly emerging trend.

The disappearance of the nipple bodes for a terrifying future for nipple fans like myself. Mannequins used to have ENORMOUS nipples, like little thumbs. Heavenly! Now, smooth and horrible. I blame Victoria's Secret, whose bras and models are always perfectly nippleless, and have managed to sexualize this anti-sexual look.

I find the women who are spending a fortune with the scowl on their faces to be offensive. If you're out shopping, don't attitude as though you're doing everyone else a favor. You are a materialistic see-u-next-tuesday, at least you should be a good mood when you're doing the only thing you probably enjoy besides yaking on that cellphone about what you bought while driving your SUV into my scooter.

I want some silver dollars!

Um, sometimes they're just looking for some clothes to wear. Not everyone is satisfied looking like a decayed pigeon corpse.

Maybe that's their way of dissuading parents from bringing their potentially bratty, annoying kids into the store and killing the vibe.

Maybe they're inverted?

@5 Japanese TV will allow animation that has boobs as long as there aren't nipples, a little weird but better than outright ban

Do they have bare chested boy torsos? With or without nipples? You know, for the man purses.

Well, at least no one's tried to have sex with the mannequins. Yet.

Having worked in visuals for Nordstrom, I can tell you that one mannequin in the window with a swimsuit on and nipples protruding gained us 3 complaints in the first day. The store manager gave us two options - cover up the nipples or sand off all nipples from the female mannequins.

I thought we should place a sign in the window, "Our mannequins are anatomically correct in deference to God who made us in his image."

@9 How dare you insult Victoria Secret!

They may have done away with nipples but they have done a lot for cleavage!
You can't have both Fnarf without looking slutty! ; )

Dan,
your ten year old boy sounds perfectly normal. 10 year old boys are either giggling or scandalized by boobs with or without nipples.

Nipples are 1,003 times sexier than cleavage. Big fat juicy ones. God, mannequins make me hot.

I would laugh heartily and ask the nearest sales clerk how many complaints s/he had fielded that day.

For you non-nipples fans? Careful what you wish for...

Disingenuous. If you want to complain, complain rather than making up straw men to do it for you.

Most of us see disembodied women's parts associated with products every day. I don't see why this instance would be shocking.

Do they make falsies for dummy torsos?

On another note - maybe Nordys is trying to appeal to people on a low income.

Maybe they are simply trying to say - IF you cant afford a Shirt AND a PURSE - most def get the purse girlfriend! Fuck a shirt!

I applaud Nordys for caring for the economic stresses of others...

I'm a nordstrom employee. Visual was probably replacing their garments with new stock. Honestly, grow up. They're just pieces of art as far as I'm concerned. If your ten year old can't accept breasts as a norm, then maybe they're a bit sheltered.
