Missing Jack?

posted by on December 13 at 8:34 AM

He’s off Project Runway… but Jack’s Flashdance parody is all over YouTube:

I love how the guy on the subway with the surprised reaction is obviously a plant whereas the real subway riders in the background aren't even paying attention--they've seen much weirder shit on that train.

That said, I'm not a Jack fan, but I did chuckle at this, and he was pretty endearing last night. I guess Susan Sontag was right about sick people.

Appreciate the spoiler.

Miss Stereo is speaking the truth.

@2 & 3

Will Smith dies at the end of I Am Legend.

Posted by Take that you fuckin' whiners. | December 13, 2007 9:06 AM

Did anyone else think he looked like an extra from The Grinch after his face swelled up?

...and now I'm going to hell.

Posted by UNPAID BLOGGER | December 13, 2007 9:07 AM

@4 - That's a whole lot of anger for 9:06 AM.

Posted by kid icarus | December 13, 2007 9:12 AM

I Am Legend? Is that the one where he's a caddy? But Jack I do know, tit implants and botox for daaaays! O I will miss him, like Barbra missed Judy for about a minute after she died.

I heard that this parody made it into Sundance this year.

Posted by Carollani | December 13, 2007 9:22 AM

Never seen this guy before... what a freakin ray of sunshine.!

Posted by december is too long | December 13, 2007 9:32 AM

Jack must be the biggest self promoter in Reality TV since Rob & Amber. With that said this was so fun and gay that I just had to love it. And I heart Flashdance so much that any homageí to the fabulous Ms. Beals is a worthwhile expense of 2 minutes of my life. Nice work Just Jack!

Oh my God, Unpaid -- I've been looking for a still of Christine Baranski in Grinch all AM. Jack, with his swollen lip, looked exactly like her in that flick. It was *weird.*

Posted by Dan Savage | December 13, 2007 10:33 AM

I cried for him, but also mercilessly mocked his plastic surgery as the root of his "infection" troubles.

(Yes, I cried, but I only cry at things like figure skating and pageants. I am tough as nails when it comes to anything else.)

@5 OMG!! I was logging on here to post that exact question! He did look like an extra from the Grinch. It was really sad in a freaky kind of way.

I found last nite's episode really sad, not only for Jack, but I felt like the producers moved through his trauma and exit awfully quickly. It felt like he should have been due more air time.

Posted by Brad | December 13, 2007 10:53 AM

Unpaid, thank you for figuring that out! It was driving me nuts trying to make the connection to something I'd seen before.

Dan, I hope along with your Christine Baranski pic you can enlighten us a bit about what exactly was going on with his face and what might have caused it.

Posted by Explorer | December 13, 2007 10:54 AM

please tell me that was his audition tape.

From Towle Road:

As you may or may not know, Jack Mackenroth, who has talked previously on the show about the fact that he's been living with HIV for 17 years, left Project Runway last night because he developed a staph infection called MRSA (Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus), which he explains (via a clip from gratz industries) more fully on his site:

Itís also sometimes referred to as the 'superbug,' as the combination of natural selection and over-prescribed antibiotic treatments has created a bacterium thatís stronger than anything we have to fight it with. (See? And you thought you were just tuning in to hear about darts and pleats.) Translation: the thing is as tough to kill as that shape-shifting metal robot in Terminator 2. There are two strains of MRSA, one you typically get in hospitals where lots of people are sick and lots of people have open wounds, and one found in communities where sick people and wounded people arenít usually in the room next door. Strangely, itís the communal variety thatís the most dangerous. We donít know from the brief clip which strain Jack has or where he got it, but if itís the communal variety thereís more of a danger other people working in very close proximity could get infected.

Jack talks about the episode in an interview on Bravo Outzone:

I announced it to the cast. Everyone cried, and then I literally dropped my scissors and went to the hospital. I was in the hospital for five days, and I had to have an IV of a really hardcore antibiotic -- twice a day for five days. The good thing about this is that if you catch it quickly enough, it goes away as quickly as it comes. It was weird, as soon as they give you the antibiotic, you kinda feel fine. I was kinda sitting in the hospital like 'Ugh, Iím bored.' And they did actually have to go in, and a plastic surgeon cut open the inside of my mouth because they had to drain all the stuff. It was really hardcore. For about a month afterwards I had a little bit of nerve damage actually. I could feel a little tingling in my face, but thatís all gone now. So then, I think I came back about a week later just to do my exit interview stuff. Ö When you see me talking on the show, in (last night's) episode, when my face is not swollen, thatís after Iíve already come back from the hospital. I kinda just want that to be clear just because I know a lot of people are saying, 'I hope youíre OK.' I know a lot of people think the show happens in real time. But just so itís clear Ė Iím fine.

@5, you nailed it! We were saying last night that he looked a little old-school Planet of the Apes, but he totally looked more like a Who.

Posted by spencer | December 13, 2007 11:13 AM

Oh sweet baby jesus! I proclaimed last night that he looked like a Who from Whoville...and I felt bad for a moment, really I did. However, after watching that Flashdance video, I think I just sorta fell in love with Jack...

I am also pissed about the spoiler. In the age of Tivo, it's simply unaccepable to run a post like this. It's blogging 101, for God's sake.

Thanks a lot, ass-munch.

Oh, and the new Raiders movie is about aliens.

Posted by Matthew | December 13, 2007 12:41 PM

he'll be back next season.

i've seen 15 mintues of the show this season.

i have had enough.

Posted by max solomon | December 13, 2007 2:42 PM

damn damn, shit on you, savage! i have this week's runway on tivo and i haven't gotten around to it yet. you just broke my heart and ruined my whole day.

Posted by kim | December 13, 2007 4:43 PM

Damn spoiler! Give people at least 24 hours to watch it (we have to sleep before it airs).

Posted by Grr | December 13, 2007 5:10 PM

Dan, you're in public. Be considerate.
@4: Not a spoiler, to those who have read the book and therefore don't plan to see the mangled series of cut-scenes that the previews show. Will fucking Smith.

Posted by Branch | December 13, 2007 11:42 PM

Normally I'm not much for drag show type parodies, but for some reason this one has me mesmerized.
