Local Edwards Supporters Come Under Scrutiny for What Could be Serious Campaign Violations

posted by on December 28 at 11:59 AM

It looks like Local SEIU chief David Rolf may have screwed up by attempting to coordinate his union’s support of presidential candidate John Edwards with the Edwards campaign.

Independent political groups like Union PACs and 527s are not allowed to coordinate their campaign efforts with candidates.

From a legal stand point -- this is much ado about nothing. From a political standpoint -- it shows Obama is in trouble.

He and his camp have been pushing this story because they are worried. He has lost ground and Edwards in on the rise. In fact, an Iowa poll released today shows Obama and Edwards tied for first place.

And what does Obama's complaining say about him ? Apparently he thinks it is OK to get millions in free media from Oprah, but working men and women should remain quiet.

Remind me: whose healthcare, jobs and education are at stake ? Whose kids are being sent to Iraq?

From a legal stand point: the email shows that Rolf did exactly what the law demands. Remember this was written in October, when folks were trying to secure the National SEIU endorsement. The law absolutely allows the type of coordination described. And as the email points out -- they are making sure they have the correct legal structures in place for any future paid media or message ads (which includes a separate legal entity, with firewalls in place).

January 3rd will be an interesting night. And we are not talking Orange Bowl.

Absolutely! Edwards supporters breaking the law is a clear sign that Obama is in trouble. Makes sense to me. If we can get Clinton supporters to break the law will that mean Obama is in trouble too?
