RSS icon Comments on Killer Spammers from Outer Space

Amy, I know you guys have gotten this question before, but... is there any plan to institute verified user names and all that fun stuff any time soon? One of those functionalities is consensus kicking of comments, yes? So you could let us trim the dingleberries from the SLOG garden?

Posted by Big Sven | December 23, 2007 10:24 PM

If Dan is truly sorry about supporting the war Dan should go over to Iraq and do charity work for the kids who have been displaced and maimed and killed in HIS war.

But he won't do that because like one slogger says in response to Dan's mea culpa:

"Hey, it's all sport at The Stranger, Dan, whether it's war, people or dildos. You taught us that."

I will "spam" the SLOG no more. You sloggers are so fucking shallow ...

Posted by dingleberry | December 23, 2007 10:56 PM

Thanks. It was getting really fucking annoying. Any chance you can set up an automatic filter that kills any posts that contain either racial slurs or "Say Yes to War" as the header?

Posted by Gitai | December 23, 2007 10:59 PM

Next time, ban his entire IP range.

Amy Kate, your fudge(mine now) is delicious. Thank you!

At the risk of further fanning the spammage:

And you've booked your own ticket to Baghdad for next week, right dingleberry?

Because, like it or not, whether you were against it from Day One or not, we're ALL paying for this fucking travesty, and thus we are ALL responsible for perpetuating it. So, rather than whinging about what someone else is or isn't doing in response, why not take a little fucking initiative, and step up to the plate on this yourself? That way, you can cleanly hold your "moral high ground" without running the risk of say, being called a fucking hypocritical cunt.

Just sayin'.

Don't you guys have the wherewithal to ban specific IPs or is this little bugger jumping from public library to public library?

Posted by keshmeshi | December 24, 2007 12:29 AM

one spammer and you are having cats ... must be panic/anxiety attacks from the christmas pallor you all project

most of us are sucking dick, eating cookies and last minute good stuff, like getting a new laptop for MYSELF

happy happy happy

like the elves

It's hard to imagine a more misdirected or pointless obsession than the "Dan Supported The War" spammer's. It's pretty much what I would expect from the sort or people who manage the antiwar protests around here, though.

Posted by tsm | December 24, 2007 7:16 AM

er, "sort of people"

WTF has happened to this blog in the past month. You should all get it over with and fuck, it'll break the tension.

Posted by Lurker | December 24, 2007 7:59 AM

You can block his IPs, but there are a nearly infinite number of proxies he can use. Better to just hunt him down and kill him.

i concur with my learned colleague, fnarf. best of the holiday season to you and mrs. f., sweetcheeks.

He's just going to keep coming back now that it's obviously pissing everyone off and scoring tons of attention.

The way the troll probably sees it, he just made Dan Savage type 308 words that he didn't need to.

Posted by Mr. Poe | December 24, 2007 8:51 AM

All I have to say on this is that Sven is right. The Slog needs to register account names.

I mean, The Slog really needs to run Scoop so you can read the conversations in a logical way. And get email when somebody replies to you. And collapse and expand threads. And so on.

But just registering an account under a verified email address would put up a good enough speed bump. And everybody fucking hates those dicks who put the last sentence of their rant in the Name field. Annoying.

Registration isn't going to solve anything. Like suicide, if a troll wants to troll, the troll will troll. Verifying a 1-minute-to-make gmail email address is all it would take--and that's max.

Posted by Mr. Poe | December 24, 2007 9:48 AM

The way the troll probably sees it, he just made Dan Savage type 308 words that he didn't need to.

Nah, I bet Dan gets paid by the word--so he gets the last laugh.

(I apologize to anybody subjected to my blast of nasty yesterday, but I was tired of opening every thread and finding that bullshit spread all over the place)

Happy holidays to all fellow Sloggers!

Posted by Wolf | December 24, 2007 11:46 AM

Registration would discourage some trolls, namely the ones who flip their identities so they don't have to face the repercussions of posting smartass or controversial comments. And it would discourage others who just want to blast - you'd be surprised how many people use fake emails and will clam up when they have to give a real one.

It's not a 100% solution but it does a lot more than "nothing." But Slog isn't subject to that much annoying trolling, this incident notwithstanding, so unless it becomes a real problem I'm happy with things staying the way they are.

all the law and order folks need to get over it - and their need to supervise and nanny all our lives, everywhere, all the time

so there are a few opinions you don't like and that disturbs your neat and tidy anaaaal retentive world

god, why are you reading and posting here? guess what, the Slog is NOT mainstream

supposedly, it is ALTERNATIVE publishing

suggestion, learn to use the delete key and skip the stuff you don't like - as in REAL life

cookie cutter people are boring and their ideas suck, suck, suck

let amy delete the real shit - good enough for me

and a nom de plume is not a new idea in publishing - ancient tradition, newly executed on line millions of times, everywhere

Posted by earl | December 24, 2007 2:13 PM

(elenchos@16): "All I have to say on this is that Sven is right."

You might want to create a keyboard shortcut for that sentence, e. ;^)

(earl@21): "nom de plume is not a new idea in publishing..."

Earl, nobody is saying you should have to put "this post approved by Milton Fillstacker, Des Moines, WA". Why, my name isn't *actually* Sven. But people who are willing to post combative things while under one consistant name (Issur and Ecce, much as they annoy me otherwise) are worthy of more consideration that someone who "bobs and weaves" under whatever name they feel like at that minute.

Another reason: it's *infuriating* when somebody appropriates your name around here after you've spent months or years trying to write a string of coherent sentences.

Posted by Big Sven | December 24, 2007 3:16 PM

Really? Somebody would actually do something like that? I'm shocked.

Big Seven - feeding my fantasy tonight

Just where do those of us who cultivate many personalities - a bit neurotic or creative ??? - let you guess

Where do we fit in as to our "real" name

And most of us were damn glad to get out of high school - and have no interest in returning to the domain of the asshole vice prin.

Love blogs - this is a good one - names, who gives a shit except those who market their name for money - ie. Dan

Or Ralph, or Tommy or LIZ

My REAL name is in two places, or three, voting, birth cert. and bank accounts.

And, thanks to Bush-Cheney, in the CIA data banks

Ida Mae or Ida Might but Ida Won't

Posted by ida mae | December 24, 2007 11:27 PM

some of my comments are now gone, thank you.. for reals, they were posted in haste, kinda stupid and much better to be erased from any memory or existence whatsoever. I shouldn't have given that dingleberry/douche-hat spamming tool any bait. I will try to do better in the future.
