At 2:28, when those back-up singers do that...that...MOVE, well, I just ascend into heaven.
Thanks, David.
PS -- Elizabeth...oh my...
Watching Aretha and thinking about the modern crop of "divas" -- the Christina Aguileras, the Mariah Careys, Amy Winehouses, even the Whitney Houstons -- it's not just that these ladies aren't as good; it's that they're playing a completely different game. They don't even know what it is she's doing. It's not about the warbling; it's about the RHYTHM, and Aretha snaps that whip harder and tighter on even the throwaway notes than the modern singers could even dream of. Just a crackling good singer, isn't she?
Fnarf, yes, exactly.
She's got talent, skill, rhythm, and feeling to burn.
I can't get enough of that clip.
Also: Aretha's a musician.
...and La Liz is just a mess.
I'd like to be that kind of a mess when I'm 70 something...good for liz. She should have pulled up her dress too.
I want my cellphone to do that NOOOO every time it rings.
It seems like there has been a movement against rhythm and cohesiveness over the last 30 years and over the last 10 it has taken over. Is it just me? Or am I just getting old and my 23 years just can't understand them kids today?
Cest' La Vie
Christina, Whitney and Mariah are all melisma-infected warblers, but you can't say that about Amy Winehouse. She's not on Aretha's level, but if she gets/stays functional, she could end up in the same ballpark as Dusty Springfield, which would be very fine.
...to say nothing of the dynamics in the performance.
Thanks a bunch. That Aretha clip is truly great.
