Slog - Comments on Good Thing We Didn't Rebuild the Damn Thing Before the Governor Got Around to "Thinking Broadly"

From the Seattle Times... Gregoire now open to options besides viaduct replacement Over the past few months, Gov. Christine Gregoire has become more open to considering a surface-and-transit future for the Seattle waterfront, instead of replacing the old Alaskan Way Viaduct with another highway. Gregoire said she has begun to think broadly about mobility and about Seattle's future as an "international city"--marked by population growth, a leading seaport and increased tourism--that needs a hospitable waterfront. "If this is to be an international city, we'll have to look at the entire system. Once you do that, the surface option becomes an...

Better late than never, I suppose. It's not like the Viaduct is rebuilding itself.

The surface / transit replacement, if it happens, had better have a trolley down the median.

If she's concerned about us becoming an international city and improving our commercial and trade capabilities, why isn't she talking about dedicated lanes or even dedicated highways for cargo? Any advantage we have of getting cargo in and out of the port more quickly means we're more competitive and get more money for us.

By using the buzz word "International City" I can only assume there is some master plan in the works to revamp Seattle.
Our Buzz word in Vancouver was "World Class City". But I just find using the word "class" to describe anything is kinda tacky as in "Real Classy". So I can see why "International City" would be a better choice for government speak to spin some future vision of Seattle.
Let's face it most of the waterfront will be redesigned to bring in tourist dollars and build extremely pricey condos. There is enough room down there to build a 2 road system to move people along with condos parks and retail. If someone had some vision it could be done over the next 10 years. It could be done like the new Olympic village in Vancouver "all Green development". Buildings that have a low green house foot print. It is easy to spin because it is popular. Redevelopment in that area can only improve the whole waterfront which is going to waste. There is not even any access to the water.

I wonder how many people from other cities have been telling her that Seattle would be a more on par with progressive world class cities if it just had a real transit system and didn't wall itself off from the water with a road like the viaduct double decker eyesore. After a while that's got to sink in I guess.

I know, we could run a streetcar route on the Alaskan Way surface street. Then we wouldn't need the viaduct at all.

Too bad no one's thought of that.

(If someone were to build such a thing, I'd recommend it be called the Seattle Highway Ignorance Trolley.)
