Slog - Comments on Golden Globe Nominations Are Out

Full press release here. There are seven nominees for best motion picture drama (there were a couple of ties), so with all the siphoning, the winner will be even less predictive of the Oscar winner than usual. The movie with the most nominations is Atonement. The awards ceremony will be broadcast on January 13, probably sans any funny jokes....

Eastern Promises? Oh please. That movie was like half of a movie, and it wasn't really all that interesting.

Michael Clayton was fucking dumb.

American Gangster was fucking boring.

I loved No Country For Old Men. I hope it wins.

It sucks that Marion Cotillard didn't get nominated for her role as Edith Piaf in La Vie En Rose. That was one of the better acting performances I've ever seen.

Very happy to see that Julie Christie was nominated for Away from Her, but Gordon Pinsent was masterful in it and I sure wish he'd been nominamted too.

Marion Cotillard DID get nominated. She's in the musical or comedy category, I believe, along with Helena Bonham Carter for Sweeney Todd. I can't believe John Fucking Travolta got nominated for Hairspray. And Amy Adams for Enchanted? It was cute, but COME ON!

I agree with Darrell. I can see the Amy Adams nomination, but John Travolta for Hairspray? Nice to see all the Sweeney Todd nominations, it was a great film!

sigh. I have such mixed emotions about John Travolta in Hairspray. On my first viewing, I HATED the performance; the accent, the coyness, the makeup, EVERYTHING. But, on a second viewing, I did come to appreciate what he was trying to do; he WAS trying to create a unique performance AS a woman and if he had a better, stronger director who could have watered down the excessive Bal'more accent and some of the mannerisms, (and insisted on that awful make-up being redesigned)it might have been really great. (Oh, and recast Christopher Walken; I think he's great and he MIGHT have worked for this role, but he and Travolta just don't fit together; it was dumb casting...)

I hate the combination of "musical" and "comedy" into a single category. It means that the dramatic musical usually wins, robbing good comedies of statues.

Comment by Kathy Fennessy

I'm with you, left coast. Pinsent may not have Christie's name recognition--outside Canada--but it's really Grant's story. Not that she isn't great, too. As she told the LA Times, "I think it's him that's making the changes, not her. And I think it's him the film is about... What happens to her is almost arbitrary."
