As a former Boy Scout, I'm trying to recall what the proper way to dispose of an "old flag" is. I seem to remember that some kind of ceremonial burning takes place. That's right, those flags will be burnt!

PJ you remember correctly -- the boy scout handbook had a section about how to dispose of worn out flags.

Here is a handy online version.

Yeah...they're incinerated. Symbolically, it's more appealing than seeing a flag wadded up in the trash.

Flag etiquette seems to be fading into oblivion. Flags aren't supposed to fly at night (unless they're illuminated), they aren't supposed to fly during inclement weather unless it's an "all-weather" flag (meaning some sort of plastic), it should never be worn on clothing or as jewelry or used in advertising or as an adornment.

So isn't it funny when all these right wing dimwits fly the flag outside their homes 24 hours a day unlit and in all kinds of weather while wearing flag pins on their lapels and having flag decals on their trucks?

How much global warming is created by burning the flags?

We show our flags more respect than we do people without health insurance or who are out of work in this country. We are so fucked up: It is a damn piece of fabric!!! Some people worship it like it is a God.

bauhaus makes a really good point. personally, i've always really respected the flag and what it stands for. what bothers me is that we on the left are so willing to accept the conservative proposition that they as a party own it.

That said, I was pleased with how obama reacted to the faux-controversy about his lapel pin.

I have a flag decal on both my bike and my car. I believe it is historically inaccurate to argue that the right has a monopoly on patriotism (as they might believe).

So would an anti-flag-burning amendment outlaw proper disposal of old flags?

You do realize today the front page story on the WaPo is about the global warming emissions created by the delegation for the conference meeting on global warming, right?

And that flag burning releases toxic chemicals, right?

I prefer to compost my flags.

How much electricity does your computer use as you drive the rest of us to stab ourselves in the eye with a pen?

my eye socket looks like a pen jar.

Anybody old enough to remember when you didn't just dispose of a flag by burning, but by wrapping around a live horse and burning the two together? Yeah, it used to be you showed real respect, but now everything is easy. No sacrifice, just a hollow gesture.

And before anybody asks: NO, I am NOT saying we should go all the way back to immolating a live girl child with every flag. That was barbaric and just stupid.

God, you fucking Slog people.

I like the fact that they gussied up a mailbox for flag disposal. I guess anything else would have looked too much like a trashcan. We couldn't have that, now could we?
