AHA! Yet another pack of lies being foisted upon The Youth Of America by our terrorist-loving liberal media!

Everybody KNOWS, jenkum is way CHEAPER than marijuana!

Smoked frequently enough (and it can be VERY habit forming), pot damages the lungs. A link to lung cancer hasn't yet been established, but that's probably because very little research has been done.

Also, marijuana is NOT good for teenager's brains, so they should avoid heavy use.

Make brownies or use a bong, folks!

People don't smoke pot all of the time because they're addicted, Irena. They smoke pot all of the time because they're losers and they don't have anything better to do.

Moderation. Use it.

Actually, pot's incredibly addictive and the jones from makes the bitchiness that comes off tobacco withdrawal look like a sunny day at the park. People coming down off their pot habit turn into raging assholes. I've seen it hundreds of times, it's like clockwork, all sorts of personality types, all sorts of circumstances.

Of course, the withdrawal from alcohol can actually fucking kill you (a claim that not even smack can make), so, you know, keep that in mind when you're making your drug choices too.

I honestly don't believe in addiction, Judah. Sorry. Not me. And I've had this argument 3,000,000 times already, so let's just agree that you're right and I'm wrong.

Done.

What is this from? About the damage pot does to your lungs, my belief is that pot is so strong (at least these days) that I can't imagine it really does much to your lungs when smoked in moderation. Cigarette smokers much take in exponentially more smoke. I take a couple small puffs after work pretty much on a daily basis. No one ever suspects I'm stoned (not even my wife unless I tell her). I really can't see any reason to abstain.

What was that Lilly Tomlin skit where she says first she started chewing the eraser on the pencil, then it just got worse? #3 is SO right, it all starts so innocently. And look what happens! A BLACK man talks rough to a WHITE man!

Just to clarify, my point was that because it's so strong, people just need a tiny bit to get stoned. Perhaps this is why most people don't smoke joints anymore.

PJ @14,

From the National Institute on Drug Abuse website:

"A study of 450 individuals found that people who smoke marijuana frequently but do not smoke tobacco have more health problems and miss more days of work than nonsmokers. Many of the extra sick days among the marijuana smokers in the study were for respiratory illnesses.

Even infrequent abuse can cause burning and stinging of the mouth and throat, often accompanied by a heavy cough. Someone who smokes marijuana regularly may have many of the same respiratory problems that tobacco smokers do, such as daily cough and phlegm production, more frequent acute chest illness, a heightened risk of lung infections, and a greater tendency to obstructed airways. Smoking marijuana possibly increases the likelihood of developing cancer of the head or neck. A study comparing 173 cancer patients and 176 healthy individuals produced evidence that marijuana smoking doubled or tripled the risk of these cancers.

Marijuana abuse also has the potential to promote cancer of the lungs and other parts of the respiratory tract because it contains irritants and carcinogens. In fact, marijuana smoke contains 50 to 70 percent more carcinogenic hydrocarbons than does tobacco smoke. It also induces high levels of an enzyme that converts certain hydrocarbons into their carcinogenic form—levels that may accelerate the changes that ultimately produce malignant cells. Marijuana users usually inhale more deeply and hold their breath longer than tobacco smokers do, which increases the lungs' exposure to carcinogenic smoke. These facts suggest that, puff for puff, smoking marijuana may be more harmful to the lungs than smoking tobacco."

And on top of that:

"Research clearly demonstrates that marijuana has the potential to cause problems in daily life or make a person's existing problems worse. Depression, anxiety, and personality disturbances have been associated with chronic marijuana use. Because marijuana compromises the ability to learn and remember information, the more a person uses marijuana the more he or she is likely to fall behind in accumulating intellectual, job, or social skills."

By the way, PJ, smoking every day is considered heavy use. That said, pot is still relatively benign compared to alcohol, religion, and other drugs. Consider using a water pipe -- it will reduce the damage.

@17:

Haven't heard of medical marijuana?

Regarding the association of depression and anxiety with pot smoking--there's a study out that showed that pot smokers who smoke once a week are less likely to be depressed than people who don't smoke any pot. Even daily smokers show lower rates of depression than non-smokers.

People with depression or anxiety might be more likely to smoke pot than the general population because it helps them deal with their symptoms.

Sure I've heard of medical marijuana -- what's your point? The smoke is still bad for your lungs, which is why the preferred method of taking it is with a vaporizer.

As for depression, I tend to agree with you -- pot lifts my mood, without a doubt. But chronic, long-term use can prevent people from achieving their goals, which can lead to depression.

Hey, it's the individual's choice as far as I'm concerned; it affects everyone differently. But if you're going to smoke it, you should know the facts. Pot smokers (and I am one) like to think marijuana is perfect, and it's not.

I've only smoked dope like twice in the last fifteen years, but Irena could you post some references for your assertions from a medical source (ie, not the National Institute on Drug Abuse.) A lot of the things you claim here I've never heard of before.

The NIDA is a douchy group of douches that aren't fit to eat a douche. For instance, in their "Facts for Teens" section, they say...

"Studies show that someone who smokes five joints per day may be taking in as many cancer-causing chemicals as someone who smokes a full pack of cigarettes every day"

Well, duh. If you're smoking five joints a day, you've got other problems. They should compare five joints to five packs of smokes. So forgive me if I'm not eager to accept their "unbiased" opinions on all these subjects.

Do an extensive web search. You'll find that most reputable medical sources agree with NIDA.

Irena, I generally like a lot of the stuff you write on the Slog, but on this one YOU do the fucking "extensive web search." YOU'RE the one posting bullshit Drug War government agencies to justify your arguments. If "most reputable medical sources" agree with you, it should be trivial for you to find corroboration for your sensationalist statements.

Sorry to be harsh, but the Drug War is almost as disasterous of a waste of time, money, civil liberties, and prison space as the War in Iraq. There are bad, dangerous drugs, but there is NOT a consensus that marijuana is one of them and if you want to make a counterproposal (especially around here) you'd better come armed with something better than Nancy Reagan-era "Just Say No" propoganda.
