How early do you think this deal was known by the city, and what role did it play in the approval of the SLUT?

uhhhh

"will consolidate its now-scattered Seattle operations in up to 11 new buildings on six blocks"

STILL SEEMS PRETTY SCATTERED TO ME

They're currently spread between downtown, international district and beacon hill. 6 blocks all together would make their operations much more condensed.

The best kept secret in Seattle real estate is who is buying the Clise property. All roads lead to the big house.

@3

Why the fuck not put them in one tall building

Can you say Taxpayer Subsidy?

Yup.

Without heavy taxpayers subsidies and illegal spot-zoning as incentive, why on Earth would you expect the rich to further enrichen the filthy rich?

uh, I think Vulcan is kinda scummy and they seldom play by the few zoning rules that Seattle has, but keeping Amazon.com in Seattle is a very, very good thing, both job wise, image wise and traffic wise.

and as a former contract worker, it IS a pain in the ass to have to shuttle between buildings.

Uh, Lake: If they need 11 buildings over six blocks that would be one helluva tall building, way too tall for the area. Not to mention that one tower is not terribly efficient for transportation, trucks, etc. This isn't a bank were talking about.

@8 - well, good point. In the end, the US economy is mostly about the very rich (0.1 percent) ripping off everyone, and only the rich (0.9 percent) treading water while everyone else sinks (all 99 percent of us).

Although by some standards, since I own my car and house and have retirement savings and run a trust, I count as rich (but don't earn that much). Savers as a whole do better than you'd expect.

Now, wouldn't a 100 story tower Silver LEEDS building have made more sense?

Yeah. This is all about the rich, right? A big scheme to line the pockets of everybody who makes more money than yourself, right?

Maybe the mayor should just tell Amazon to fuck off and die. Amazon can relocate it's corporate headquarters in Chicago next to boeing. Maybe we should tell Microsoft to fuck off too. Take all those employees and ship them overseas!

We don't need local jobs in Seattle. Jobs are for rich people only. Those jerks!

aside from the center for wooden boats, and a handful of other places, south lake union has been a bit of a wasteland for a long, long time. it'll still be a wasteland, just with fancier cars.

i'm gonna just go ahead and say-

this is great news.

south lake union needs a big tenant like this. it will add lots of daytime vibrancy to an up and coming downtown neighborhood that is currently defined by boxy storage units and antique shops.

so what if they got a bit of a break? the city defines it's own rules anyway and for this one they just thought it would be more beneficial to get a big tenant located in central seattle that will act as a catalyst for a currently underutilized neighborhood. BIG DEAL.

the tax base will expand and everyone will have a new place to go get coffee. oh noes!

oh and heaven forbid we might get a few people to walk to work. or, lord have mercy, ride a comfortable, modern electric streetcar.

Remember the Austin Powers movie where the evil dude threatens to blow up the world and demands ONE MMMMMMILLLLLLION DOLLARRRS?

Here Vulcan was offering to pay $5 million into the affordable housing fund in exchange for the zzoning change up to 12 stories, and those badass negotiators at City Hall squeezed an extra

TWO AND A HALF MILLLLLLLION DOLLARS

out of 'em.

Woo-hoo, woo-hoo, just try to say Vulcan has 'em in its pocket now!

That's 2,500,000.000000000000000000

Well, it's not like they could consolidate their headquarters down SODO way, what with the wonderful city council zoning it major industrial.
