But since he would burst into tears if I let on that I had been hurt, I learned how to withstand pain and keep a poker face. That's a skill that has served me well over the years ;-)

And there is quite a bit of difference between a scalding and a burn from oil. Water boils at about 212 degrees (f) at sea level. Fryer oil is usually kept at about 350 degrees (f) Plus, it's harder to flush from a wound.
