$1,000,000,000

posted by on December 5 at 14:58 PM

That’s how much we’ve spent on abstinence education since 1998. We’re gearing up to spend another $200,000,000 next year. And where’s that money gotten us?

Dan, it just proves that we haven't tried hard enough. Keep spending money!

Maybe we could force all teenage boys to grow mustaches until they get married.

Remember, in the Red Bush theology, if it's a Failure, you need to spend more on it!

Why does are nation need Gardrasil?

Some bastard decided to call sex with a condom "safe sex," when it really does little to prevent the transmission of HPV. And, last I checked, some 40% of young women were infected with HPV. How many of them didn't realize they had put too much confidence in the condom?

Almost EVERYONE is infected with HPV. If you've had more than 3 or 4 partners, you probably are too. Get over it.

Maybe the kids learning abstinence-only aren't the kids getting pregnant.

Maybe the teen pregnancy rate will go down once the abstinence-only kids grow to teen-pregnancy age.

Then again, maybe teens just like to have sex.

It's actually Ignorance Only education.

So, how much does that work out to per child?

Research has shown that teaching kids abstinence doesn't stop them from having sex, or from getting pregnant or catching an STD. The approach that seems to work is to teach kids about SAFE sex! These kids are going to have sex regardless, so at least you could make sure they're safe about it. Studies (and common sense) indicate that schools that use the "safe sex" approach have lower rates of teen pregnancy and STD cases than those that use the "abstinence" approach.

No, the only approach that works is FORCIBLE STERILIZATION. Chop off their nasty bits and send them to the work camps toot sweet, that's what I say!

1) The Democrats are total douchebags.
2) Can someone please confront Bush with this, given that he vetoed health insurance for poor kids saying that there wasn't any money for it.
3) The media and Democrats are total useless douchebags and really responsible for the state of this country post-2006.

I'm 21 and engaged... and I'm a virgin.

I guess that $1 billion was spent entirely on me.

Thanks U.S. government!

13, I am confused, you hate democrats, but you want Bush, a Republican, to be confronted with these statistics and to account for the contradictary nature of his policies, and then you reiterate that you hate democrats, and say that it's somehow thier fault... please explain.

@16 The democrats as a party are spineless, we either need some progresive third party to emerge, or reform the toothless dems into the hard-nosed, eye-gouging, kick-em while they are down party we need now.

Diana @ 11 scored this one! We really do need more people in the service industry! Raise up a booming generation to support our corporations...

I blame the Democrats for supporting another $200 million on this. I can't see how Bush escapes questions at every turn on how there are money for these religious projects but not children's health. The latter makes me more angry about the Dems (and the media).
