See, now if I had been allowed to play with firearms at youth group, I might've actually attended one.

Gun play is a pretty extreme kink.

Isn't this more of a gun control issue than a youth pastor issue?

@3 -- agreed

You would have done better with a piece on the conviction of Papa Pilgrim, Dan.

O They Will Know We Are Christians By...
...the way we beat our daughters into unrecognizeability.

This is kind of scraping the bottom of the youth-pastor-watch barrel, Dan. Wait for good ones.

I'm from Pittsburgh and read the story in the Post Gazette. The Trib story that Dan links to doesn't give a lot of information. You may want check out the story at: http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/07329/836650-55.stm

It states, "Mr. Owens [the pastor] told police one of the boys wanted to look at the shotgun. He said he unloaded it before handing it to him. However, it still contained a cartridge." That piece of information is a bit more damning. I don't really think that youth pastors should be playing with guns with teenagers.

Guns don't kill people, youth pastors who don't know how to supervise gun use kill people.

What a waste of a life.

Jesus, Dan. Compartmentalize your character assassination, will you?

I don't mind damning commentary on shitheels who don't practice or teach safe gun handling, but keep it distinct from commentary on shitheels who act reprehensibly or irresponsibly under color of religion. There is no way this particular pastor isn't despondent and wracked with guilt, and there's a difference between despondent and wracked with guilt over a tragic, life-destroying accident (albeit a criminally irresponsible and completely preventable one) and despondent and wracked with guilt over, say, reporters and police showing up at the rectory with probing questions regarding recently unearthed home movies that clearly show a grunting, perspiring man of the cloth plumbing the depths of a valiumed-up fourteen-year-old's ass.

Pick your target, man. Guns are a harder sell than creepy churchmen, neither is a slam-dunk here, and linking the two this way cheapens the rest of the youth pastor watch, which tends toward legitimately enjoyable schadenfreude.
