Unless you blatantly lie and say you did not have contact with someone you actually did, you cannot preserve clients' confidentiality by saying who you did not have contact with since one could deduce who you did by your lack of denial on any specific instance. The only way to both be truthful and preserve confidentiality would be to refuse to confirm OR deny association. So either he is lying in this case or his clients should be concerned with their confidentiality.
