Each friendship, each relationship, each casual acquaintance sets up its own social rules. There are things I can say to one friend I can't say to another because of the depth of our friendship, their experiences, my experiences, or some other fact.

For example, I usually refer to myself as a queer man, but a friend of mine from South Africa still sees "queer" as a slur, so I don't address him that way or use that word around him. By that same token, I doubt there's any situation I could walk up to many of my black friends and call them "my nigga," despite the fact that many of those same friends call each other that all the time.

A friend of mine likes to blame everything that happens to him on the fact that he's Mexican, so he'll walk in and tell us "The boss was riding my wetback self again..."

Whether a thing is racism or not depends entirely on who's saying it, with what intent, and to whom they are saying it.

About the girl, well, she's an enigma, and she raises a question. I know smart, lovely young people who have been turned away from UW, and yet someone like this - someone who writes like an eighth grader and apparently lacks a moral center - gets in. What - did she ace her SATs or something? Another reason, perhaps, to do away with admission testing and go back to the interview system.

I'm sure he knows what racism is. We all do. The problem is that you don't seem to know what a sense of humor is.

I think I've got a pretty clear grasp on it. Racism is concious or unconcious biases derived solely based on the perceived race of the group being discussed/slurred/targeted.

I don't think that contradicts what I said before, either. My mother looks as white as I do, but her mother is mestiza chicana. My grandmother can easily pass for black, and in the sixties people assumed she was black. My mother was teased constantly because the spanish speaking nigger lady dropped her off for school. In the reverse, I've been told I'm not welcome in chicano events because I'm too white.

I think I have a pretty good grasp on what racism is and what it means. The intent of the speaker, the feeling behind their words, matters more than the words themselves. Who they are saying it to, and in what context matters more than the words themselves. I have that good friend who calls himself a wetback all the time, if I call him that it's ok because of our friendship, our shared heritage, and the fact that he knows it doesn't matter to me that he didn't exactly come here legally. When other people call him that, strangers, or jackasses he knows, he's livid. And rightly so.

Context matters more than just the words, and unless you understand that, I don't think you understand what racism means.

Have you never said something horrid, shocking, disgusting, to your friends just to make them laugh because of the obviously horrid nature of what you said? No dead baby jokes? No misogynistic comments? No agist lines?

I know I've said things before just to shock my friends. Hell, blasphemy is a fun way to shock friends.

Now, if he's calling his jewish friends a "dirty jew" as an inside joke between them based on their relationship, it could be funny to them. Judging by the way they all laughed, it apparently was. Alternatively, he could have been a friend of a friend invited over who crossed several social lines and was never invited back because he offended the other people in the video.

We don't know. Until we know the context, ie: who each speaker is, what relationships they share, etc., then we cannot judge whether his saying that shows his own racism or if it was just an off color joke that got spread beyond its circle of understanding.
