“You Dirty Jew”

posted by on November 15 at 9:27 AM

This infamous video of Amanda Knox drinking with friends supposedly proves what a drunken slutty murderess she was. (Btw, be sure to read Frizzelle’s review of Knox’s equally infamous short story in this week’s paper.)

Knox, of course, is the UW student who’s now being held in Italy as a central suspect in the lurid Hollywood Babylon-style sex murder case.

However, one thing about the video that’s not getting much attention is the weird “dirty Jew” comment that one of her friends spits out. Is this common parlance at UW these days?

"Dirty Jew" is commonplace on every campus in America, Feit.

Josh find out took this video and then posted it on the net. A brand new angle will get you international press. Gobs of Google hits. Then do a story on how effective Grossman's ads were, just for me

If you want international press, just do what Knox did. Nothing. Get it?!?!>!lrjklse

When I was drinking in college we said a lot of inappropriate slurs to people's faces. (Not behind their backs if that helps.) Of course this was before kids starting taping themselves constantly. Hard to know what to think about it w/o knowing if the speaker or the target are Jewish.

Yep... it's pretty common. Usually by people, or at people, who actually are jewish, but still. What's a joke between friends can be called racism by observers.

Not sure if you've heard of it (it's pretty obscure) but there is this show called South-Park where one of the main characters calls the other a dirty Jew all the time. This is probably unrelated though because that show isn't all that popular with college aged kids, and even if it were, what kind of college kid goes around aping catchphrases they hear on tv?

@12 I think your pithy "tard" retort puts to rest any questions regarding your ability to grasp the concept in question.

I hate to blow you mind, but having a Jewish friend does not give a person a free pass at bullshit anti-Semitic behavior.

@10

Each friendship, each relationship, each casual acquaintance sets up its own social rules. There are things I can say to one friend I can't say to another because of the depth of our friendship, their experiences, my experiences, or some other fact.

For example, I usually refer to myself as a queer man, but a friend of mine from South Africa still sees "queer" as a slur, so I don't address him that way or use that word around him. By that same token, I doubt there's any situation I could walk up to many of my black friends and call them "my nigga," despite the fact that many of those same friends call each other that all the time.

A friend of mine likes to blame everything that happens to him on the fact that he's Mexican, so he'll walk in and tell us "The boss was riding my wetback self again..."

Whether a thing is racism or not depends entirely on who's saying it, with what intent, and to whom they are saying it.

@18 - I think your sanctimonious hand-slap of a retort puts to rest any questions regarding your ability to grasp the concept of off-color humor.

I hate to blow your mind, but having a Jewish friend does not prevent a person from quoting a cartoon show.

Yes, Josh. Every year, the UW's Fall Fling starts off with a showing of The Eternal Jew and distribution of armbands. This is followed by marching, brass band concerts, and a speech from the Studentslebensfuehrer.

Cartman is funny because he does things that are beyondd the pale. He's intellectually aware, but he's completely amoral. In other words, he's a sociopath - behaviour one shouldn't try to emulate, no?

I'd hate to think where western civilization would be without the Jewish people.

About the girl, well, she's an enigma, and she raises a question. I know smart, lovely young people who have been turned away from UW, and yet someone like this - someone who writes like an eighth grader and apparently lacks a moral center - gets in. What - did she ace her SATs or something? Another reason, perhaps, to do away with admission testing and go back to the interview system.

Posted by Bauhaus | November 15, 2007 10:46 AM

@26: The UW already replaced the admission index (combination of GPA and SAT) with a detailed review.

Good to know, Greg, but UW still requires the SAT or ACT for admission, and if you think admissions doesn't evaluate that(those) number(s), I've got a bridge I'd like to sell ya.

There's a reason Andrew Sullivan coined the term "South Park Republican," which he meant fondly. That show is crap.

Lyn @29

Then define it for me.

I think I've got a pretty clear grasp on it. Racism is concious or unconcious biases derived solely based on the perceived race of the group being discussed/slurred/targeted.

Did I miss something?

I don't think that contradicts what I said before, either. My mother looks as white as I do, but her mother is mestiza chicana. My grandmother can easily pass for black, and in the sixties people assumed she was black. My mother was teased constantly because the spanish speaking nigger lady dropped her off for school. In the reverse, I've been told I'm not welcome in chicano events because I'm too white.

I think I have a pretty good grasp on what racism is and what it means. The intent of the speaker, the feeling behind their words, matters more than the words themselves. Who they are saying it to, and in what context matters more than the words themselves. I have that good friend who calls himself a wetback all the time, if I call him that it's ok because of our friendship, our shared heritage, and the fact that he knows it doesn't matter to me that he didn't exactly come here legally. When other people call him that, strangers, or jackasses he knows, he's livid. And rightly so.

Context matters more than just the words, and unless you understand that, I don't think you understand what racism means.

Cartman is funny. We're supposed to laugh at him precisely because he is a cartoon caricature of a child sociopath. Drunken frat brah #2,456 saying "dirty Jew" in Cartman's voice is not funny, no matter how many Jewish friends he may or may not have.

@ 36

Have you never said something horrid, shocking, disgusting, to your friends just to make them laugh because of the obviously horrid nature of what you said? No dead baby jokes? No misogynistic comments? No agist lines?

Never?

I know I've said things before just to shock my friends. Hell, blasphemy is a fun way to shock friends.

Now, if he's calling his jewish friends a "dirty jew" as an inside joke between them based on their relationship, it could be funny to them. Judging by the way they all laughed, it apparently was. Alternatively, he could have been a friend of a friend invited over who crossed several social lines and was never invited back because he offended the other people in the video.

We don't know. Until we know the context, ie: who each speaker is, what relationships they share, etc., then we cannot judge whether his saying that shows his own racism or if it was just an off color joke that got spread beyond its circle of understanding.

I'm glad The Stranger has the courage to call out University of Washington on the anti-semitic atmosphere there.

It's hard enough living in Seattle when the city won't pay for a Menorah in the Airport, but here is a State Univeristy promoting anti-semitism. It's discusting.

In Israel no Univeristy student ever makes a racist comment. That's because Israel is a rightous society founded on the world's only true religion, Judaism.
