i toured universal studios the year heartbeeps was made and got to see all of the props and robot costumes! of course, i was a zygote. but it was still thrilling.

Eraserhead is too boring to be disturbing.

And I don't get that Kubrick quotation. A Clockwork Orange shows the consequences of violence? To who, the aggressors if they get caught? ACO is one of the most stylized, sanitized violent movies I've ever seen.

@4, I agree about ACO, according to todays standards. But you need to consider how it played to audiences when it was first released. Put it into its proper context.

The rape scene in Irreversible was nothing compared to the fire extinguisher scene in the beginning.

"Pink Flamingos," and "Sick," deserve to be on that list.

Surprised not to see Cannibal Holocaust on that list. There's tons of horribly gruesome Italian films of the 70s (and Japanese films of the 90's) that are disturbing in a similar vein, but Cannibal Holocaust is usually touted as the grand daddy of them all.

If your going to include el Topo, might as well make a mention of Begotten as well. Not quite considered the art classic that el Topo is, but just as offensively; allegorically.

And really, I'd say Salo should be the top if I wouldn't worry people would create films solely in a attempt to take it's crown away. It's borderline snuff.

I'm gonna have to add "Kids" and "Happiness."

I'm not quite sure how you can make a list of the most disturbing movies of all time and not include a single Haneke film. For me at least, his work is more indelibly disturbing than any of the others on the list.

Eraserhead and Happiness are two of the only movies that have left me in a state of actual emotional turmoil, to the point of feeling kind of sick. With Eraserhead, it was the white worms and the bizarre little chickens, for some reason. "They're new! No bigger than your fist - but they're NEW!" and then they squeeze 'em and the black oil drips out...I still have issues with that scene. Don't ask me why, I'm not squeamish at all, but there is something disturbing about that. Happiness, the whole fucking movie just makes you want to torch the entire human race for being disgusting scum. Bleah.

But the only movie to ever cause an actual flashback - and that DID disturb me, although I love the movie - is Time Bandits.

Happiness was pretty funny. So was Schindler's List.
