UW Student Arrested in Italy for Sex Murder of Brit Roommate

posted by on November 7 at 8:12 AM

Christ.

Back home, those who know Amanda Knox recall an outgoing Seattle girl, a University of Washington honor student, a young woman making the most of a year studying abroad.

None could have foreseen this: The 20-year-old from Arbor Heights placed squarely at the center of a case that’s riveted Europe—the throat-slashing slaying and rape of Knox’s female roommate.

Police questioned Knox late last week in connection with the violent attack that bloodied her apartment in the central Italian city of Perugia. Early Tuesday, after detectives interrogated her about inconsistencies in her account, she reportedly confessed to playing a role in the slaying.

Also under suspicion are Knox’s Italian boyfriend, Raffaele Sollecito, 23, and Congolese musician Patrick Diya Lumumba, 37, who owned the local bar where Knox worked. All three have been arrested, with charges expected later this week….
European newspapers reported Tuesday that Knox admitted to police that she and the men sexually assaulted and killed Kercher. Italian authorities expect to charge all three with murder and participating in an act of sexual violence.

From the Guardian:

It has also emerged that there is a story on Ms Knox’s MySpace site about two brothers discussing the drugging and rape of a girl.

@12: Poe, I wouldn't be surprised if she was innocent (or at least, not guilty). This whole thing sounds fishy and I don't trust the confession she provided only after 10 hours of grilling by the Italian police.

I guess I rather hope she's innocent. She used to make my coffee and...get ready for it...she seemed so normal. Affable. Etc.

If she's guilty, it worries me that I didn't pick up on a murderous trait in someone.

Poe: It appears you could be wrong about Amanda. New information indicates she never admitted to a crime -- only that she heard thuds and screaming coming from her roommate's bedroom and she paniced and plugged her ears. It's stupid she didn't come out with that story in the first place but given her circumstances (foreign country, scared like shit, etc.) it's understandable.

I don't think she's a murderer. Her mochas were made with love.

I would like everyone to remember that Ted Bundy seemed like a normal, handsome, nice guy who worked at a crisis hotline with Ann Rule (true crime author). He had a fiancee and seemed normal.(but he did burn a head in secret in his fiancee's fireplace.) You can't look at someone or drink their coffee and think "well they look nice so, they can't be a murder." Lets leave the decisions up to the professionals. If she is guilty then let her be punished. If she is only guilty of doing nothing to stop a volent death. Then let her be punished.

Uh, Sara, a lot of this is tongue 'n cheek.

Nobody seriously draws conclusions based on mochas made from love on whether a person is capable of murder.

Ok... Well if no one is serious about drawing conclusions with mochas, then perhaps it should not be said. If she is innocent ,then I doubt she feels the whole thing is something to joke about. I don't think that murder is a joking matter. We should all take the situation with the seriousness it deserves. RIP Meredith.

Having lost a friend to a violent crime I know the pain this family feels. I was also just as hurt to stumble across thoughtless words about my friend on a blog from people who blamed the fact that he as in the wrong place at the wrong time on his punk rock life style. I just asking you to remember that the whole world can read this, not just people who think it is funny to joke about murder.

The fact is she was a participant in the unsavoury act that eventually resulted in the death of beautiful English girl meredith.

The reason police took her in was due to evidence: Long hair, similiar to amandas found in the hands and fingernails of the dead girl, blood stain footprints, matching amandas. Police took her in and she cracked, now she is lying to cover her back.

She alongside the others detained are pure evil. She is as guilty as hell.

Whoa Mary, "pure evil"?? comparing her to my definition of pure evil she's not even close. I'm not defending her, I just think she's more of a retard than someone who is truely "evil". If someone commits an evil act, does that make them "pure evil"??

I knew a girl in high school - popular, athlete, good student, all the guys liked her - well years later she was convinced by her married lover to kill his lupus-plagued wife which she did. She was also married and had 2 beautiful children and now is in prison for life. You would never in a million years guess that she would commit first degree murder - she was kinda of a tough girl, but still - COMMIT MURDER. Still to this day I cannot believe that I know someone who could do such a thing, much less this girl. As they say - DON'T JUDGE A BOOK BY IT'S COVER.

Dirk @ 46 I guess we each have our own definition of 'pure evil', which is good, as this is a free country, and individuals should be free to express themselves, providing they are not hurting others.

However, when I last looked in the dictionary the definition for evil was - wickedness, wicked deed, morally bad. And for pure, it was - unmixed, untainted, complete.

In my view, the acts committed by Amanda and her accomplaces were 'competely wicked and morally bad.

Which if I use the dictionary term is: 'Pure evil'.

what did Meridith do to deserve this? How can a human being sexually abuse and then calmly take anothers life?

As for retard Dirk, thats an insult to disabled individuals out there. Let not give her a title she is not fit to own!

Little Miss innocent, my ass, She is as guilty as hell , chuck her in jail and throw away the key.

If you know enough about the case to conclusively condemn the knox girl to life in prison or even death, then provide some links, so others can make up their own mind too. Did you know amanda knox personally? Did she fuck you over once?

"Long hair, similiar to amandas found in the hands and fingernails of the dead girl, blood stain footprints, matching amandas."

Where are you getting this? What the fuck are "matching amandas"? I haven't come across any of these things in any of what I've read on this case, but maybe I've missed something. She may well be a horrible girl who murders and tortures people for kicks, but I don't really know that to be true or untrue, I just know what I read/see/hear through the media. Is it inconceivable that the Italian police have their own agenda? I have no personal stake in the outcome of this case and i'm not going to get righteously judgmental about people i don't even know.

Ooh Derwood

Hit a personal button did I?

How sad it is that individuals need to resort to personal attacks in order to get their point across.

I suggest you pick up a newspaper, go on the web and read honey (information on blood, hair and other DNA samples provided). Hence the reason why Most of us can do that. And if that is too difficult for you. Then go back to school!

'An Italian judge has ruled there are "serious indications of guilt" to justify keeping three friends of murdered British student Meredith Kercher in jail'. - That aint me, making it up honey, It's media baby.

Quick and helpful suggestion Derwood try to get some help with your reading and then perhaps you might be able to keep up.

Oh and and as for the foul language, shame on you, whats with that? Are you unable to communicate without profanity? Is it because you are unable to read well? Is this frustration coming through?

Lets guess how long it will take Derwood to respond with more littered profanity.

The rape & murder of a woman is degraded further by the woman-hating comments from Derwood, Mr.Poe, et al. Woman Hating is so fasionable, even the slaves like Knox are aiding the Man. No outrage here over the visious rape & murder of Meredith, just alot of expose' on the true character of the men writing here, Can you conjur up ONE female you love?( oh I don't know, go for the one that gave birth to you) and imagine she dies in this despicable way......... So Amanda Knox at the very least " plugs her ears when a SISTER is being raped and murdered, ahh it's nice to see how male identified she is........how did that happen? Go figure, You males embrace it, promote it, buy it, profit from it, make it.

"Meredith murdered refusing to take part in orgy" thats what the British news papers are saying. Now how common is "orgy" among American young adults? I remember my American friend (fmale and sociable but quite normal) once said, "Oh I havent done an orgy for a while". I could not make out whether she was joking or not. An English friend of mine says orgy is Americans' favorite pastime. Is it true? Does Amanda's social life sounds normal to you, her fellow country folks?

By the way, she made "Killer Americano" in the coffe shop? "Her hat says guilty"? Seattle folks, I love your twisted sense of humour. You guys are cruel but funny, I must say. My prediction is that this is going to be a Hollywood film in two years time and Amanda would write a memoir having secured an O J Simpson-esque megabucks deal.

I find it funny how the Seattle "Stranger" portrays her as a normal, well educated girl who is "placed squarely" in the centre of the investigation. Poor her. She shouldn't have been so cold as to assist in the murder of her room-mate, wash her clothes of evidence (or try to) the next day in a public launderette (bad move) and then give a false account of the night's events to the police. Regardless of the part she played in the murder and sexual assault of Meredith Kercher, she deserves to be punished, as does anyone who commits a crime. I notice the "Stranger" also seemed to deem the victim's identity irrelevant until the final paragraph, where they only mentioned her last name. Nice and respectful.

d.j.

The "cunt" comment was only directed towards mary, it's not really any of your business to get upset over it because it wasn't directed at you, just mary. I was trying to give your "sister" Amanda the benefit of the doubt. Your other "sister" mary seemed a little too eager to venomously condemn someone she doesn't even know like some vulturous ghoul. The suspicions surrounding the murder of Meredith, as reported in the media, hit mary's personal button in such a way as to activate her desire to act as judge and executioner of her fellow "sister".

Sorry I got so rude with the "c" word, but attitudes like mary's really tick me off.

Hey Derwood, welcome back!!!!!

For the record sugar, there was no venom on my part, just good old plain English, if my recollection is correct the venom came straight out of your mouth, shame on you dude!

Further, in case your lack of (I asume) education fails you, this is blog otherwise known as slog, it is not a 'Free Amanda Campaign' website. If thats what you were looking for you are in the wrong place dude. Everybody is entitled to use this site to express their views, are you aware of freedom of speech?

When doing so, individuals should not disrepect or respond inappropriately to a response because they do not like it.

Further it is DJs business, because you inadvertantly made it so, by spewing your profanitys on a blog, did you think you were sending me a personal e-mail?

If you cannot stand the heat, stay out of the kitchen, or go back to school.

Finally Amanda, was not the only flatmate or friend known to Meridith yet her story was the only inconsistent one out of the others. Go figure! Do you see any of Meridiths other friends or flat mates in custody, I dont!

Meridith Kercher, remember her (also a sister), lost her life in horrific circumstances. I still stand by my conviction, Guilty as hell.

As difficult as this may be, I have no further intention of responding you Mr uneducated. You aint the point of this Slog Derwood remember that!

Mary

Nothing you say makes sense. I recommend withholding judgement on the case and you interpret that as a "Free Amanda" campaign. You should neither free nor condemn her until you have definite proof one way or the other. Inattentive and overeager.

I don't really care if someone misspells words or not, it's not that big a deal if the meaning comes across. But if you're going to accuse me of a lack of education then you ought to spell your words correctly. It undermines your point.

You interpret my disagreeing with you as trying to censor you. Nowhere did I tell you not to post here. I disagree with your rush to judgement on the Amanda Knox case, but you seem to think disagreeing with you is censoring you. This may stem from an issue with a parent or other authority figure in your past. My opinion is that by all means continue to post here and continue to express yourself in the way that you do.

No need to continue responding to my posts since you never addressed any of the valid points that I made and yammered on and on like a big sloppy hole spewing attention-starved sludge. There's nothing wrong with that, though.

Derwood,

Usually I don't get so worked up and involved on the internet, but I've met Amanda and thought she was nice, etcetera. I haven't been able to stop reading about this. Of course the whole story is tragic, and scary in its own right, but some of the things about this story that seem most horrifying are the public reception and media coverage. I had (naively) never realized the scope of sensationalism in the media, or considered the general public's capacity to interpert what they read. I'm grateful for your comments.
