The Italian Job

posted by on November 13 at 7:11 AM

Things aren’t looking good for UW student Amanda Knox…

The American university student at the heart of the police inquiry into the death of Meredith Kercher was caught on camera entering the building where the murder took place on the evening of the killing, it emerged yesterday.

Police revealed that Amanda Knox was picked up by CCTV cameras situated above the building where she lived with the Leeds University student, contradicting her previous claims that she had spent the night with her Italian boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito.

Since her arrest 10 days ago, Ms Knox has repeatedly changed the story of where she was on the night of the murder, and officers investigating the killing are said to be hopeful that seeing the footage will force her to confess to being at the scene of the crime.

Come off it. No one from Seattle could possibly be involved in something like this! It's obviously some sort of resentment towards Americans or something

Here's the interesting paragraph from the article:

The existence of the camera footage will seriously undermine Ms Knox's alibi that she spent the evening at her boyfriend's house. It was her second version of what happened that night, when during a pre-dawn interrogation she admitted being in the house and hearing Meredith scream, that prompted police to claim the case was "closed". But following a visit by her mother to the prison where she is being held, Ms Knox has reverted once again to her original testimony.

Either her mother didn't counsel her to tell the truth, or she's lying despite that.

What a fucked-up situation. The court had better sort it all out and put away those responsible.

When you name a child Amanda (*must be loved* in latin, as in *filia mea amanda est*).

The mother should have sent in a lawyer instead because the best the girld could do would be to shut up. It probably doesn't matter though becuase they claim to have a wealth of forensic evidence including bloddy fingerprints.

but.. but.. she's such a good girl! i mean, she would never do something like that. i hope my pornstar daughters turn out just like her!

@ 5, I'm not sure you have the right to remain silent in Italy.

Frankly I don't believe any of it -- not the original story, not the changed version, not the fact that she changed her story, the fact that the guy is her boyfriend -- literally nothing. For one thing, it's Italy, and for another, we're hearing what the cops say she said, not what she said. I think waiting for the trial might be sensible. Of course no one gives a shit about sensible.

she was there while the men raped & killed her roommate.

i buy her testimony that she put her hands over her ears till is was over. she was scared & freaked.

then they did a half-assed job of faking a break-in, then split (the 37 y.o. back to his bar, the couple back to his place) to give themselves a plausable alibi.

her testimony that she was so high on hash she doesn't remember anything is bullshit.

Meredith Kercher would give a shit about sensible, if she were alive to.

I don't mean to be a wet blanket, but I so do not give two flying fucks at a rolling donut about this story.

Dead White Girl! Ohmygod!

She does not deserve a fair trial.

if you don't care, why post?

this will be a movie before the decade is out.

@13: I think the point is, the media in this country would not be printing anything at all about this story if it were not an attractive young white woman who had been killed. It doesn't hurt the coverage that one of the main suspects is African. "White woman killed by black man" has always sold newspapers/blog hits.

The appeal of the story is it's a study abroad program. A lot of people who read the paper can relate to the fear of something like this happening to them. It's your worst nightmare hence a titillating story.

@ 11 and 15,

I think the point is that she is a local girl that some people on slog knew, and that this seems a very unlikely crime for this person. It was also pretty brutal, and it seems like it is a possible cover up. It has also gotten stirred up some international controversy in the UK and Italy. If this bores you, then why the fuck comment?

I bet the UW's main page doesn't hype this achievement like it does everything else marginally connected to campus - "former UW professor puts on pants all by himself, wins award, UW ver ver ver proud!!!" etc etc etc.

Although it would be pretty funny to watch them spin this one.

I don't have much pity for poor Amanda Knox at this point. It's an interesting story, but only in that sick-o fascination with white girls gone bad kinda way. As per usual, the Stranger staff focuses on people who look like them. And gets scooped by the P-I and taken to task by them:

Maybe she did it and then afterwards regretted it.

If she converts to Christianity I'm sure GWB will pardon her and send in the Marines to get her home.

Very Special Episode of Law & Order: SVU, for sure. I would say by season's end, but not with the strike. next season at the earliest. Unless L&O wants to cop to the fact that their scripts aren't so much written as improvised off the newspaper...

"Did IQs just drop sharply while I was away?" - Ellen Ripley.

p@13: ?!?

GeoGreg@15: exactly.

Patrick@17: "a very unlikely crime for this person." Why's that? Because she's rich and white? "If this bores you, then why the fuck comment?" Because the slog has a rich history of people commenting when a post is stupid or boring. Asshole.

@23

So in conclusion, Big Sven, if a some white uw girl gets accused of murder while studying abroad, it's not worth mentioning, because she's not black.

I think some posts, like "Dumbledore=gay", attract a different, let's just call it "stupider", class of Slog commenter.

now I get it@23, my point you fucking moron is that this is a non-story that is only seized upon by the media because everyone likes to see rich white girls fuck up and/or be in danger. It's not that it SHOULD be mentioned if she was black, dumbass, it's that it WOULDN'T.

But it shouldn't either way. Thousands upon thousands of people are killed every year in America. Work to prevent date rape on campus and spousal abuse if you're so fucking concerned about others, since that effects 1000x as many people as "rich exchange student sex killings". But you're not concerned, you're just fapping to the freak show.

So, 'biggie j', I guess Seattle is the magical place where there are no murders, huh? Last I checked, Seattle has MORE murders than some other cities.

If she is just being 'attacked', why is she lying about where she was during the murder? Video shows her at the scene the same night of the murder. She claimed that she spent the night at her b'f's house, where the murder weapon was found, incidentally. Why did they find the victim's DNA on a knife in Knox's boyfriend's apartment?
Seriously, if Seattle is the fairy-tale world where no one commits murder, let me know so I can move to this magical city where everyone is safe and there is no unnatural death.

How about this story, biggie j? Stuff like that doesn't happen in Seattle, but mothers let their tiny babies starve to death while they are on a drinking binge with the dead babies IN THE SAME ROOM AS SHE WAS!!!

"A Kent mother told a judge she was deeply sorry for letting her babies starve to death while she went on a drinking binge, though she didn't try to explain what led to the tragedy."

Yeah, stuff like that doesn't happen in Seattle.

fnarf- maybe you should go be the head investigator on this story. you seem to know everything about the case and the MURDERER!

I am a psychology student, and don't you people who claim that you KNOW she wouldn't do this understand that NOBODY knows what another person is capable of? What, you think she would walk around telling people that she is capable of watching a friend get raped and then stabbed her in the neck?

No one knows what anyone else is capable of. That's the bottom line fact.

Besides, I heard "Foxy Knoxy" was a slutty ho anyways. That's why the police are using her myspace page against her. Proof of character, people. If a rapist can get away because of the woman he raped's character, then "Foxy Knoxy's" character can be used to prove that she IS NOT as perfect and innocent and some people think.
