...in China: Used condoms are being recycled into hair bands in southern China, threatening to spread sexually-transmittable diseases they were originally meant to prevent, state media reported Tuesday. In the latest example of potentially harmful Chinese-made products, rubber hair bands have been found in local markets and beauty salons in Dongguan and Guangzhou cities in southern Guangdong province, China Daily newspaper said. "These cheap and colourful rubber bands and hair ties sell well ... threatening the health of local people," it said. Despite being recycled, the hair bands could still contain bacteria and viruses, it said. "People could be infected...

So, the jury is still out on HIV from blowjobs, but HIV from used condoms in your mouth is a known transmission source? I'm glad I got that question answered.

Well, it depends on open cuts and sores. If you are a meth addict, you should not perform blowjobs, for example, as that increases your risk of AIDS/HIV.

Same goes if you have herpes and open sores in your mouth, or active lesions of any kind. Piercings increase your risk factor too.

Okay seriously? I think this whole thing is retarded. A#1, where the hell are they getting the condoms from? Are there used condom nabbers who root for them in the trash? A#2 don't they have to do some processing to make them into rubber bands? At the very least, wouldn't they at least ... wash them? A#3 what STD is so potent that it would remain after days of oxygen and washing?

This whole story is crap.

"In the latest example of potentially harmful Chinese-made products" -- c'mon, folks, you're being conned here.

For starters, prove to me that the cost of the rubber in hair bands is a significant part of the costs of the manufacturer -- and that it's more than the cost of collecting used condoms (from where?).

We happen to be in the middle of a media-generated hysteria over Chinese products, and another desperate "journalist" has made some shit up to try and get picked up on the wire. It's happened before.

The condoms on display on the woman's hat in the AFP story are spectacularly unlikely to be used ones. Condoms are free in China.

Actually the AFP caption for the hat is, "Clothing decorated with condoms seen at the 4th China Reproductive Health New Technologies and Products Expo in Beijing."

This is not even one of the examples of recycled condom hairbands. It's just a picture of a Chinese person wearing a condom hat to PROMOTE REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH at a REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH EXPO.
