Kathy Keolker would have won if Renton had landed the Sonics - unfortunately for her that didn't happen and she wasn't able to play the hero.

It wasn't the backing of the Sonics deal that hurt her, it was the fact that Renton ended up not getting the Sonics that hurt her.

Kathy Keolker's supporters also included at least six labor unions, the WA Conservation Voters, Governor Christine Gregoire (pictured with her on her website) and countless other Democratic elected officials. She was truly the Democratic candidate for mayor. So, the fact that Margarita Prentice backed a Democrat who lost to a Republican challenger means that Prentice is in trouble in a Democratic primary? Huh?! That's an unsophisticated analysis. There was much more to that campaign than the Sonics. Is Gregoire also at risk of being challenged by Martinez because she, too, has supported the Sonics and not sought the abolition of payday lending? When Juan Martinez gave his last recorded campaign contribution (out of apparently only three in his lifetime according to the PDC), in 2006 to Stephanie Pure, he was living on Eastlake Ave. in Seattle. Prentice ought to send him a welcome mat to welcome him to his new district!

All credit for what happened in Olympia yesterday goes to the citizens.

Voter pressure put on legislators over the past three weeks (and frankly over the past 10 years) made the difference. Nothing like having 5 state supreme justices calling the people stupid to motivate and galvinize the support of the 58% of the people who approved I-747 (and a whole lot of the 42% who voted no but who have come to rely on its taxpayer protections). It was a huge 200,000 vote margin. Under the court's theory, then, 100,000 voters voted yes, but 'mistakenly' voted yes (because of some magical hypnotism or voodoo, i suppose) when they would have voted no if only they had known 'the truth'. Unbelievably absurd.

As for Adam Kline, he is fantastic. The media loves conflict and he and I provide lots of it. But the reality is that when he looks at me, he gets angry because he sees himself. Same aggressiveness, bombacity, and media whorishness. Different political philosophy, sure (he wants government to have 100% of taxpayers' paychecks), but the tactics are identical. No, don't think for a second that I don't like and appreciate him and accept him as he is. What's not to admire about his aggressiveness and yes, rudeness -- civility is overrated. He believes in what he's doing and he's working the press to get his message to the people. It's the challenge we all face when dealing with a manytimes lazy press.

The problem is that his philosophy didn't have the support of the people (58%), his colleagues in the state house (91%) nor his colleagues in the senate (81%). Every Republican and probably 80% of elected Democrats, including tax-hiking Democrat Gregoire, voted against his philosophy.

I didn't call the special session, Democrat Governor Gregoire did. I didn't write the bill, his Democrat colleagues did. I didn't vote for their bill, his Democrat colleagues did. He called me names, but the reality is he really wanted to call Gregoire and his Democrat colleagues those names but that'd hurt his own party so he does some gratuitous Eyman-bashing to try to keep the D's base energized. Not a bad strategy if you think your base is stupid and won't recognize the hollowness of his tactic. But again, he's playing with the cards he's been dealt and making the best of it.

This has been brewing for months now. Every active Democrat who I know who has talked to Juan, including me, has told him he couldn't possibly be this stupid.

Margarita will beat him like a drum, upside down and sideways. If Juan gets 40 percent of the vote he can call it a moral victory. Margarita has built years of political capital in the 11th District, where I'll bet not a single commenter on this thread lives.

Payday lending and the Sonics are two issues out of thousands that a state legislator has to deal with, especially the chair of Senate Ways and Means.

If all you know about how she has helped the people in her District is what you read in the Stranger, I can't help that. I don't agree with her position on those two issues either. So what? That's hardly all there is.

Anybody who thinks Margarita is caving to Tim Eyman is a damn fool. She *hates* Eyman, Dino Rossi, and the lot of them. But she will write a more equitable property tax package on her schedule, and not on Josh Feit's schedule or on Juan Martinez' schedule.

Ivan--Margarita is a shell of what she once was. The 11th deserves far better than what she provides. She had built political capital over the years. But as of late she hasn't earned it. All too often lately she is on the side of Olympia lobbyists, not the people of her district.

Time for a change. I don't buy the argument that in a one-party town, we shouldn't challenge incumbents. Take a good hard look at Margarita's voting record before you decide.
