Slog - Comments on Reichert's Reversal

Rep. Dave Reichert (R-8) voted for ENDA last week. ENDA is the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, which protects gays and lesbians in the workplace. Reichert broke with his two Republican colleagues from Washington State to support the House bill. In fact, only 35 Republicans (out of 200) voted in favor of the bill. Ideologically, it seems like an odd vote for Reichert. The Human Rights Campaign, a gay rights group, gave him a lousy 25% rating last session.

It's a good time to review that video of Reichert explaining how the GOP leadership gives him orders to vote against the party in these situations to help him keep his seat.

We on the left should congratulate him on this vote, for whatever reason he took it. The more we congratulate him, the more we remind the public that even Republicans like Dave Reichert support laws against gay discrimination, the more the collective will of the people continues to shift left.

Look...moving our issues forward matters more than electing specific individuals. Don't get me wrong, I'm voting for the D in that race, but we should also recognize and take progress where we get it. That's how you begin to shape the public mind on these difficult issues.

Way to go Reichert. You're coming along nicely.

...and the political middle line continues it's ongoing shift to the left. :-)

Think how many rapists and domestic violence perpatrators they had to let loose due to Reichert.
