Then why did you post a picture of a pair of ASICS?

Oddly, this sort of effete marketing snobbery doesn't come up as much at suburban strip mall Payless Shoes where I shop every few years

It's like boycotting Nestle over the child-labor practices of the suppliers I guess.

Or ... you could buy organic fair trade chocolate, like that made in Fremont at Theo's Chocolate factory.

What is the good brand of sneaker?

They pay you enough to shop at Nordstroms?

Posted by NapoleonXIV | November 26, 2007 12:56 PM

That must be why no one's ever heard of them.

"Under no circumstances should you ever buy any shoes other than black-spot sneakers sold on the Adbusters.org website. Everything else exploits child labor and harms the environment." Overheard from my subconscious mind.

Maybe to keep stuff like this off the slog we need to start a Seattle version of http://www.overheardinnewyork.com/

They’re turning kids into slaves just to make cheaper sneakers.
But what’s the real cost?
’Cause the sneakers don’t seem that much cheaper.
Why are we still paying so much for sneakers
When you got them made by little slave kids?
What are your overheads?

Veep Cheney is going to the hospital for another heart related issue. Is this the part where Cheney resigns and then Bush appoints an '08 contender as the new veep?
The dems. of course would never let that happen. Just like they would never approve a pro-torture attorney general.

@10 You made my day with that.

Most people might have this filed under "no shit!" already, but...

There are no athletic shoes being manufactured under practices that differ greatly from Nike's.

Posted by Dougsf | November 26, 2007 1:29 PM
15

@14 not only that (since 1996 at least), but they are, as far as similar companies go, fairly environmentally friendly.

Because I bought Asics instead, on the advice of my salesperson!

Posted by ECB | November 26, 2007 2:06 PM

so ECB bought the nerdiest shoe brand possilbe. go to a compsci 300 level class and make note of the footwear;

newbalance, ascics, saucony, and basically any running shoe that is not mainstream and is not used for running by the nerds.

Posted by Bellevue Ave | November 26, 2007 2:08 PM

Need I remind you that pair of ascics with a members only jacket took silver in the last hipster olympics?

Nerdy? Nerdy like a FOX!

Yeah, but Asics and Saucony work.

If u r a runner, nothing beats Asics.

Ziggity, shoes cost what people are willing to pay for them, not what they cost to make. If Nike could figure out how to make their $200 sneakers for one penny each, they would cost $200.

Actually, I just clued in to something said in a prior post - did ECB shop on Buy Nothing Day?

Posted by Will in Seattle | November 26, 2007 3:33 PM

Then, of course, there's the Starbury, which sells for $14.98.

Of course, they were also made in a sweatshop like all the rest.

Nike is the closest I'll ever come to my dream of having an army of children building me shoes.

nike gets the brunt of the attention regarding human rights issues because they are such a large corporation. their business practices are far from the worst, and really, they should be applauded occasionally for taking steps in the right direction.

Agreed. Nike product does suck, and most people who run the NYC marathon do so in Asics, which means they are no joke in the department of functionality. Erica knows what she's doing.

Back in the Frederick & Nelson days, the men's department was where the ladies shoes now are. There was a very strange, and very cruisy bathroom behind that. I don't know where ladies shoes were.

The only reason I even mention that is because I was trying to think of something even more obscure and dreary than the original post.

That was bitchy of me, wasn't it? Maybe I need a Frango milkshake....

I tried the Black spots. They were way too narrow. Comfort trumps ethics.

And Asics are pretty great for running.

Check out Brooks for great running shoes. Good local product.
