O They Will Know We Are Christians…

posted by on November 21 at 10:39 AM

…minister getting arrested on charges of forcible rape.

Investigators say the 23 year old minister used the same tactics each time he approached women off Parkway and Motel Drives.

Once he lured them into his car, police say at least 4 women were raped while the suspect held a butcher knife to their necks…. Monday Ireland was charged with 4 felony counts of forcible rape with special circumstances. He could face additional punishment since there are multiple victims and he used a dangerous weapon.

The report say that Ireland is already a registered sex offender, but doesn’t mention what his previous convictions were for.

23-year-old minister? Sick. That's absolutely sick.

You should put all of these in a book, Dan. It blows my mind how often you can post "O They Will Know We Are Christians..." entries.

@2 - There's already a book that explains why these things are all perfectly acceptable. It's called The Bible. Don't leave home to molest or rape without it!

@4 - Sure, but... The Bible isn't as fun to read as one of Dan Savages books.

Hey Dan, when I was in Chicago over the summer, I was in the frontyard watering plants for my cousin while she was at work. The next-door neighbor and I started talking over the fence, as he was sitting on his front stoop clipping his toenails. It came up that he was gay, and works with really bad AIDS victims in a hospice, often children. He's familiar with your books, I told him I met you a couple of times. After about 15 minutes of chitchat like that, we spent the second half of our conversation talking solely about this weird fetish of injecting one's ball-sac with saline so it enlarges to something like a small watermelon. What's up with that?!

i wonder why the church would hire a registered sex offender. at 23 the offense couldn't have been that long ago. of course, ireland didn't abuse his position at the church when committing his crimes.

Yes...he used the "SAME TACTIC"...which when picking up prostitutes is usually, "How are you?...Care to spend some time?...Want to go somewhere?...Need some company?" or simply flashing some money...don't think it was that hard to do... Or perhaps he's got a really slick, innovative, fail-proof method and *THAT'S* why they won't release the details!! (Not to downplay this...rape is horrible and should not happen under any circumstances)

yeah -- saying he lured the women is a bit disingenuous. they women wanted to get into the car. it wasn't until later that they would come to regret their decision.

it's not like you need to paint a worse picture of this guy -- he's a knife wielding rapist. on the other hand, it is appropriate (and nice to see) that they are rightly treating the prostitutes entirely as victims in this case. to focus on the chosen profession of these women trivializes the gravity of ireland's actions.

You will know we are urban liberals by the fact that we use exactly the same tactics that we claim are intellectually dishonest, exploitive, and hypocritical when employed by our political opponents.

And just as a point of order, Dan, your excuse for this behavior, that Christians are distinguished from all the special interest groups you belong to by the fact that they alone claim to be the source of all morality and that people can't be moral or just, let alone "saved", unless they're Christians -- that excuse plays about as far as your constant admonishments that all closeted queers are cowards and, "Don’t dig density? You’re not green. Period." You do, in fact, believe that your way is the only way -- and the only moral way -- on a host of issues, you boring fucking hypocrite.

"Lured" is correct. He attracted the women into the car under false pretenses -- they thought an act of prostitution was going to occur, not an act of rape.

What you're saying is like if I was kidnapping and murdering children on Halloween "well, they WANTED to go to the door".

$10 says the little fucksock thought he was perfectly justified and did nothing wrong becasue the women were immoral sinners.

fnarf, hmmm... in that case, i wouldn't say you lured them to the door with halloween candy, as that is a normal activity they were intending upon doing. maybe you lured them inside with promises for more candy.

that's interesting. i've always thought lured involved persuasion of some sort. someone doing what they intended to do requires no persuasion.

i mean, which is more correct:

After he lured them into his car..

--or--

After picking up the women...

They might not have been prostitutes. I used to hitchhike all the time when I was a teen...
Let's not jump to conclusions.

@9, 10, 12, 14: Attempting to define the circumstances under which the women got into the car seems pointless considering that he raped them at knifepoint. It doesn't really matter why they got into the car, just that they did and he then pulled a knife.

@15:
Maybe not all of them. It just says that it was a spot where prostitutes hung out. Odds are that most of them WERE prostitutes, but some of them could've been regular women who just happened to be walking down the street in a bad part of town.

@17. yes, the significant part of this sad story is that this man is a rapist. for that he must be held accountable (if/when proven guilty). to say, however, that the other details do not matter, or that language used is not important, is not true.
