Be careful, Charles. Ian Smith would spit in your face x5 before you could spit in his. Dead or alive.

I bet the people of Zimbabwe long for the days of White African rule. Hell the Black African ruler they have now makes the White system look like a picnic.

gnossos, you're either idly complaining about a problem and blaming colonial whitey or you're actually doing something besides turning star wars into some lunatic marxist/black power iconic movie. neither of them helps africa.

Mugabe took over from Ian Smith 28 years ago.

Isn't Mugabe lots of people's fault now?

Starting with Mugabe???

Current inflation rate in Zimbabwe: 14,841%.

How has Mugabe's regime not collapsed? Won't the army want paychecks in real money someday?

I agree with BA, time for Chaz to head to Africa and make a difference.

or at least stop complaining about how white man ruined africa...

or stop using his privilege in america to turn everything into a marxist message...

@2 and @12 it was, and is,the ian smith's of the world that make the mugabe's possible. evil breeds evil. white rhodesians feared black majority rule so they repressed the society and did their best to hold it back. you reap what you sow.

Christ, I thought he died twenty years ago. No, no one wishes for him back, and Mugabe's faults do not make him look better in retrospect.

About the most generous thing you could say about him is that he was a prisoner of his own prejudices, and that the thing he represented was no more possible in the long term than dogs flying spaceships.

@13 evil breeds evil but i really could care less about what a person that moved from africa has to say about evil that he was fleeing and wont face like a man.

Hey.

Let's not forget the British Empire which set this up in the first place.

Just saying.

Mugabe and Ian Smith are both devils.

#13: I think Charles is full of shit on a lot of things, but that's just plain silly. As if overthrowing a dictator were as easy as buying something on eBay; a uniquely American criticism, to be sure.

@15:

charles needs to be dead or in prison for you to believe he's a man? no one person can save zimbabwe from mugabe until mugabe is in the grave. what are YOU doing to save Murka from Bush? yeah, i thought so.

mugabe's 80-something. so in 2010, charles mudede for president of zimbabwe!

Sometimes the Charles hating is fun, but other times it's distracting. Can't we just celebrate that Smith is dead? Charles didn't say capitalism caused Mugabe or the White Devil caused Mugabe or that your mother caused Mugabe. Cut him a little slack.

Smith is dead. Yay! It's days like today that I wished I believed in Hell.

(1) Telling immigrants to go back where they came from is stupid and racist. No wonder the whole world hates the US.

(2) FYI capitalism - in the form of European imperialism and consequent white settlement in Zimbabwe - did in fact cause both Smith and Mugagbe.

well, i certainly didn't vote for bush. but i also don't blame bush wholly for the silly shit that has happened to our country since his 2 terms. nay, I blame americans for being duped and I blame more radical people for not doing something more - radical?

Posted by Bellevue Ave | November 20, 2007 3:32 PM

1. telling immigrants to go home when all they do is pollute our country with silliness, and to boot they pollute it with a message that is the antithesis of why they succeeded here seems about right. also the fact he pollutes our culture with the most ridiculous connections that he just makes up and expects us to adopt without any backing but his word is the limit.

2. chaz is more american than african so he should take no glee in the death of someone that probably had a positive impact on his life. his parents fled crazy africa because of the nuttery going on and now he is a successful person because of it. he has the opportunity to be ludicrous because a white man made life suck ass in africa. hooray immigration?

3. imperialism isn't capitalism and certainly isn't even capitalism on it's own considering that most countries engaged in mercantilism policies. but i don't expect someone who throws around the word capitalist as a pejorative to understand any of that.

Posted by Bellevue Ave | November 20, 2007 3:39 PM
26

and you are so full of shit BA, that you don't merit getting intelligent responses.

Posted by gnossos | November 20, 2007 3:44 PM

that was actually pretty intelligent. 100-nil

Posted by Bellevue Ave | November 20, 2007 3:48 PM

People (especially ones from outside the US) throw around "capitalism" as a pejorative because - unlike US residents - they have experienced the consequences of an economic system that made the US the richest country in the world *at their expense.* But I don't expect a racist ass who claims his culture is being polluted by counter-arguments to understand that.

this is my first autumn here, and the idiots in bloom are quite beautiful.

Posted by Fyodor Zulinski | November 20, 2007 3:52 PM

counter arguments?

chaz feels that capitalism is wrong. yet he chose to stay in a society that was more capitalist society than others. he could have gone to canada, france, africa, etc etc. to live in a socialist utopia but he didn't.

he stayed here so he could make dubious connections between anything and marxism /black.

and how am i being racist? cause i think chaz blaming whitey is tired and he offers nothing to constructive discourse on helping africa? because he celebrates the death of one man? because he stays in a place he detests of without offering constructive input on how to wright things?

saying that capitalism is bad isnt constructive. it is an assertion and an idealogical debate minefield at that. there is no real capitalism in the world, only semi capitalistic governments and systems within the governments.

Posted by Bellevue Ave | November 20, 2007 3:59 PM
31

also capitalism as a pejorative is semantic debate. imperialism isnt capitalism, capitalism isnt america's economy, and american capitalism isnt what ruined africa.

Posted by Bellevue Ave | November 20, 2007 4:02 PM
32

@13 Maybe so, Maybe not. Maybe the White-African fear was based on knowing what whould happen to the country under Black-African rule (See today's mess in Zimbabwe for details). But sure as SHIT Black-Africans have it worse now. Are you saying the Black Africans of Zimbabwe are better off now? I don't think so.

Posted by Sargon Bighorn | November 20, 2007 4:30 PM
33

I return to my original premise...People who tell immigrants to go back where they came from - even if they find said immigrants annoying - even if they think said immigrants are "polluting" the national culture - are stupid and racist.

Please note, no one said capitalism was bad. That's a moral judgement. What I said was that capitalism had negative consequences for most people in Africa even as it was having positive consequences for some people in the US. That's a historical judgment.

Posted by mike | November 20, 2007 4:31 PM

im telling one immigrant to go to africa to make a difference because he is being a useless tool here. i want more immigrants really. but not chaz. chaz can go talk about the joys of marxism while actually helping a marxist cause in africa.

Posted by Bellevue Ave | November 20, 2007 4:34 PM
35

@33
no they are not. there is nothing "racisit" about not wanting people harboring muderous ideologies coming to this country.

africans have had negative consequences for most people in Africa

If I were a Marxist (which I'm not) there's no place in the world I would rather be doing political work than the US. Belly of the beast and all that. Seriously, since the end of WW2 the US has been the economic and military base area of global capital. No place more important to challenge the hegemony of capital.

Posted by mike | November 20, 2007 4:45 PM
37

@35 - What "murderous ideologies" are you referring to? You sound very much like GW Bush. But let me remind you that the European colonialist ideology that sustained Ian Smith, among others, was nothing if not murderous.

Posted by mike | November 20, 2007 4:49 PM

but he isnt challenging it by making ridiculous comparisons in pop culture nor is he challenging it by being a lazy ass, pot smoking, middle class writer. he isnt the working man and he isnt working for the working man.

yes if you don't like marxism you must be a Neocon or a facisit. nice.

Umm Ian Smith was a persona non grata in europe durring his rule. sanctions were heavy against rhodesia.

Much the same i wouldn' really care for white south african expats who profited off aparthied coming to this country either.

and yes BA is right, his posts are drivel. it doesn't make you smart to think they are not.

Posted by gnossos | November 20, 2007 5:04 PM

@32 so basically its better to let the white folks rule? when you set up a system that excludes the majority from power you set up a pressure cooker and create a environment that creates all sorts of craziness rather than let the steam out a bit at a time. the system in rhodesia created mugabe. just because a people don't want ian smith doesn't mean they have to be blamed for mugabe. they are held hostage by two madmen

So I should thank Hitler for getting my family to immigrate here?

Is your hatred for Mudede becoming that irrational?

Posted by keshmeshi | November 20, 2007 5:08 PM

you shouldn't thank hitler because he wasn't responsible for making your parents immigrate. I've thought about that after I posted that: chaz has no reason to hate ian smith personally because he had no choice in what his parents did with regards to immigration. he can hate ian smith for being an ass but that's just hollow posturing. its like hating hitler: who doesn't, and how does that fight nazism today and future?

I, for one, am glad that fucking ascot wearing imperialist autocrat bastard is gone. His style was stale and his ideology was detrimental to the avant-garde post-colonial struggle. His rule hurt the peoples cause immeasurably. The quest for equality of the masses was better displayed in the mantle of traditional African garb, as represented by Black Nationalism and its' concomitant vibrancy and powerful mode of dress!!!

Posted by gucci clad marxist | November 20, 2007 6:31 PM

@32 - It doesn't seem to take a genius to appreciate the argument that the current state of black African rule is affected by the white African autocratic rule that preceded it. You think that, after years of white rule building a political culture that values nothing but power, Zimbabwe could suddenly and spontaneously develop a democratic society without conflict?

You'd fit in great in the Bush administration.
