What? Nothing on the redev at 40th and Stone Way N?
Shouldn't that be 15th Ave NE & NE 123rd?
do these people expect to never eat?
I really like these very modern large emporia filled with all sorts of merchandise
zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
I find it incredibly amusing that Maple Leaf (which barely borders Pinehurst and won't be affected in the least by this issue), and Laurelhurst (which isn't even in the original Northgate Overlay rezone) have decided to stick their noses into our community. Talk about NIMBYs out of control. We have been working with Safeway for 15+ years to come to an agreement that would make the residents of Pinehurst, and Safeway happy, along with removing 3 houses that are nothing more than eyesores, and have been for 10+ years. For once, MLCC & Laurelhurst need to butt out and deal with their own issues instead of crossing this far over the boundary to annoy the long time residents of Pinehurst.
I for one, am happy that we have FINALLY been able to work out a plan with Safeway that meets everyone's needs in the neighbourhood. By no means has this been an easy process, and it's been going on for almost 20 years. A resolution now (assuming the City Counci doesn't cave to pressure) is a blessing to those of us living around Safeway.
Let Maple Leaf have their little tantrum in court. It's not going to do them any good, but,it might succeed in damaging what was once a good reputation. So more power to them if this is the kind of obnoxiousness they feel the need to pursue.
Can people in Maple Leaf get laid or something so they don't oppose projects in *other* neighborhoods? This project has stalled for EVER, in no small part because of Steinbruek's own meddling and now, finally, when it moves ahead Maple Leaf gets a lawyer? Jeez, North Seattle needs to CHILL THE HELL OUT.
what safeway where?
& where's "pinehurst"?
Good god. I wish to fuck that every single David Miller type anal retententive, NIMBY, progress blocking asshole would move the fuck to Salt Lake City or somewhere else even more distant. These assholes are what makes Seattle such a difficult, expensive city to live in. These assholes are why we don't have a functioning rail system like most cities, why we don't have logical development policies and why I can't walk anywhere in my neighborhood to do my daily business. I have lived here all my life, (44 years) and I am sick to fucking death of the David Millers of the world. Hey David, if your reading this, FUCK YOU.
WTF?? There's no Safeway at 5th ave NE & NE 123rd, its a residental neighborhood next to I-5.
How can you be a residential neighborhood next to I-5?
Earplugs?
Local zoning precedents such as those inherent in this proposal do indeed have citywide ramifications, and Maple Leaf are well within their rights to object to further attempts to undermine Seattle's Land Use Code.
I'm curious, did Safeway buy the houses ten years ago and then let them become eyesores? This seems to be the strategy all over the City. Whadyaknow, pretty soon the neighbors are so sick of the mess we've made they'll do anything to have us clean it up.
On another note, what Fred @4 says makes me think this is not the plan to be making an example of, though I'm also concerned about Citywide implications. For a major business --which is undergoing expansion everywhere around here -- to really work constructively with a community, is remarkable.
My partner and I just moved to the Jackson Park neighborhood, 1 neighborhood north of Pinehurst. I've shopped at that Safeway; it's fine as is, but shoddy in comparison to the gargantuan food palaces they're so in love with building nowadays. Frankly, we'd appreciate a monster food barn w/ greater selection. But regardless of whether it happens, I'm in 100% agreement with the folks telling the Maple Leaf crowd to f*ck right off. It's my neighborhood, not yours. Go worry about your pampered brats in your squeaky-clean (comparatively speaking) public schools; we'll take care of ourselves up here, thanks.
