Between you and Jen, I'm just glad SOMEBODY on the interwebs is awake this morning.

That hairball looks like a small otter.

The technical term for a human hairball is a trichobezoar

OK. This would not be nearly as gross if I hadn't started by day by almost stepping on a similar-looking (but way smaller) hairball that my roommate's cat so kindly coughed up this morning.

But still. Eeeww.

Fans of Cecil Adams may remember a column he wrote some time ago about bezoars. Hairballs of goats and other animals were allegedly treasured in medieval and Renaissance times. Queen Elizabeth I (the one from the 16th century) supposedly had one among her crown jewels. I'll have to check out the Royal Hairball on my next trip to Britain.

I only knew about bezoars from reading comic books -- there's an old issue of Neil Gaiman's Sandman that features one in the plot...

I'll admit it: I know bezoars from Harry Potter.
