News Nappy Halloween!

onI don’t know what’s more troubling. That an employee of the Department of Homeland Security—which is constantly under fire for singling out people of color at airports—thought it would be a good idea to wear blackface, fake dreadlocks, and a prison uniform to an agency Halloween party or that three of his managers—including Julie L. Myers, assistant secretary of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement division—awarded him the prize for “most original” costume.

jesus. fucking. christ.
I know I speak for millions of Americans when I say that I'm so glad we have competent thoughtful people in our government. Wow.
What the fuck is wrong with these people?
What's the big fucking deal? It's called a "costume". Is she came peddling a bike, wearing a tie and holding a book of Mormon no one would have said anything other than, "HA HA, you're a Mormon!"
I am so, so glad that I'm not Michael Chertoff, and I don't have to apologize for the stupid shit that his underlings seem to do on a daily basis.
You do start to wonder - not that they would ever be able to actually follow through on the promise anyway - but when he (and they) are handing out all these jobs to their friends, spouses, offspring, what have you - do they even say, at least as an attempt : "OK, now, you won't do anything stupid once we let you have this, will you?"
Lee's right. It's not a stereotype if it's true. I mean all black people belong in prison. So just lighten up (hee, hee, "lighten up").
Yeah, Doug, that's exactly what I was getting at. You're on the ball! What if the lady had been wearing the same get up but instead of black face had been wearing a mask of GWB. No one would have accused her of saying the entire white race is/will be/should be in prison. Maybe she was dressed as Mumia - a black man with nappy dreads who is in prison.
Damn, I wanted a picture with that link!

The person who wore the costume has not been identified. The woman you're talking about is assistant secretary of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement for the Department of Homeland Security. She was one of the managers who awarded the person a prize for the costume.
"Myers' agency is responsible for apprehending and jailing violators of immigration and customs laws, including conducting raids at work sites to round up undocumented workers."
Considering the position she's in, it was a really, really dumb thing for her to do. In that context, yes, it smacks terribly of racism.
Al Jolson objects regarding the "originality" of the costume.
Yeah, I have to say, Myers implicitly condoning the costume, by awarding it "most original" is maybe the worst thing about this.
this is great....why? because it is reality. it shows that this idea of "all americans are united against the foreign evil" is bullshit. see....only white people are deathly afraid of terrorism. colored people just see terrorists as another asshole to deal with. I mean we have to deal with white assholes every day....that is why no colored person talks about 9 11 every other minute....we have assholes living next door...so some asshole living half the world away doesn't really matter to us...
I'll tell you what's more disturbing than both those things: the fact that as the US economy is about to fall screaming into a trillion dollar hole, the Senate saw fit to waste its time and ours with this trivia.
