Names Can Be Deceiving

posted by on November 28 at 16:05 PM

Did you know there’s a new late night food spot on the Hill? It’s called Taco Gringos (their gringo-ness made obvious by their refusal to follow proper Spanish pluralization rules). They make tacos that are not filled with the delicious meat of white people: instead, they are filled with the delicious meat of pink pigs, brown and white cows, and whatever color of fake animal TVP comes from. They are $2 each, and unlike most tacos found on Capitol Hill, they are actually delicious. It’s a surprising development.

I don’t know the address and I can’t find it online—It’s where the Sweatshop used to be on East Olive Way, right across the street from Clever Dunn’s. When I find the address out, I’ll put it in the GetOut Restaurant Guide so everyone can review it when they go.

I think the greatest part about it is that it’s only open from Tues-Sat 8 pm-3 am. A business keeping hours like that? It makes me miss my old place of employ, Frites.

That's brilliant. I live right by there and hate cooking.

If they were tacos made of Gringo flesh it would say " Tacos De Gringos"

I think an apt translation might be "whitey taco"

To not call it "Tacos Gringos" is so ignorant.

Are we trying to display our cultural stupidity?

Good job, Taco Gringos.

@6 - perhaps it's actually meant to be English, and "Taco" is the adjective.

It's no worse than Chinoise Cafe.

Anyway, Ari's plug seems to have worked. There was a pretty sizable line when I walked by earlier.

Weird, there used to be a Tacos Gringos in Springfield, Illinois in the early 80's

-And it was Tacos with an "s"

Tacos are fine, but we need burritos, good ones. Back in SF, o man, I would walk to the taco window and things were good. I also used to walk to BART to get to school or work, but that's a different story.

People from California do not seem to appreciate Taco Del Mar nor Taco Time yet they will sometimes eat at Taco Bell. Makes no sense to me.

@13 - that's easily explained. People from California (myself included) understand and lament Seattle's lack of good mexican food, so they see no reason for the existance of TDM or TT - as for Taco Bell, I assume it's just a throwback to the one "Mexican" chain that exists down there that one can find up here. Maybe it reminds them of the food they ate while in high school? Hard to say on that part.

@7, exactly! What type of Gringos run this place (or eat there)? Taco Gringos of course. Sort of like a Burger King or Dairy Queen... it's the adjective use of "Taco".

@6 Chill the fuck out. I live in Austin, and, even as a second-language learner of Spanish, I could drive through my neighborhood right now and find countless grammatically incorrect signs in Spanish, posted by Spanish speakers, from Mexico. Are they ignorant of themselves? Or maybe they just made a mistake... the way people are prone to do... without any whisper of ethnocentrism or racial bias. For example, I don't think that you're culturally ignorant b/c you have a split infinitive in your post ("to not call"). :)

Taco Gringos being a descriptor of the dudes running the place, not the food. As in, "hey everyone! We're the Taco Gringos!"

Plus it's delicious. Who cares what it's called?
