*A court source told the English-language Arab News that the judges had decided to punish the woman further for "her attempt to aggravate and influence the judiciary through the media."*

- Your gas dollars hard at work flogging a 19 year old rape victim.

Oh goody! If we're cloning monkeys, can't we also take stem cells from their embryos, thereby side-stepping the pro-fetus right?

I'm so glad we're all buddy buddy with Saudi Arabia.

200 lashes? Can a person actually survive that?

Hey, we play the "blame the victim" game here, too. The Saudis are just more brutally honest about it.

The Saudis are not and never were our allies, in any meaningful sense of the word.

The sooner we realize that and redirect the US tax dollars wasted in the middle east to building US alternative energy supplies, the better.

@7: Why don't you call up the Carlyle Group? I'm sure they'll get right on that.

I think the cloned monkeys were meant specifically for Ben & Jerry's Chunky Monkey™ ice cream--now with more chunks of delicious monkey in every bite!

i believe what is happening in saudi arabia is a complete miscarriage of justice (not in the legal sense as they define it).

but it should be noted that the rape victim is being punished for "riding in a car with unrelated males" and for "challenging the court in the press". her former lawyer, for instance, is also in trouble.

i do not believe these are just laws either, but the truth is outrageous enough. the idea that being a victim of rape -- in this case -- was punished with 200 lashes is not the complete truth.

@5,

That question was brought up on Slog a while ago. Apparently, the lashes will be dealt out several at a time. The woman will be put into prison to heal and then will receive the next batch. The whole process could take months or years.
